Intrastate mainline routes

Tue Jul 05, 2016 3:02 pm

I'm curious which states have the most mainline intrastate (scheduled mainline routes between two cities within the same state) airline routes today. This question occurred to me when flying between SAT-DAL recently on Southwest, when I realized that it's pretty rare these days (with some notable exceptions) to fly within state borders on a mainline jet. Texas, of course, is full of intrastate routes using mainline metal, as are California, Alaska and Hawaii. How many such intrastate routes exist nationwide? Which use the largest aircraft? And what are the most unusual intrastate routes using mainline metal?

Seems the intrastate route with the largest aircraft is the MIA-MCO route on AA, which uses 767s. United used to fly mainline aircraft from Denver to Eagle-Vail during the ski season, but it looks like they've cut that route back to RJs.

Setting aside California and Texas, intra-Alaska routes and Hawaiian's inter-island routes, here are some of the other intrastate routes between city pairs I've been able to find. Which ones am I missing?

New York:
LGA-BUF (DL, B6)
JFK-SYR (B6)

Missouri:
STL-MCI (WN)

Nevada:
LAS-RNO (WN)

North Carolina:
CLT-RDU (AA)
CLT-ILM (AA)

Pennsylvania:
PHL-PIT (AA)

Georgia:
ATL-SAV (DL)
ATL-AGS (DL)

Florida:
MIA-MCO (DL, AA)
TPA-MIA (AA)
JAX-FLL (B6)
FLL-TPA (Spirit, WN)

Funny how , even though stated in original post and question, some obviously don't read whole thing.

G4 also does RNO-LAS, and soon DEN-MTJ.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

If Canada counts, I know Air Canada does mainline YYC-YEG seasonally. Of course if you think outside the U.S, there are probably hundreds of routes across Australia and New Zealand, as well as in Asia.

I like this topic. Yes, intra-Hawaii and intra-Alaska should be excluded as Hawaiians have to fly to get around the islands and Alaska has a very
limited road system. I am surprised that AA does not have mainline service between JAX and MIA.

You don't even need to go back that far. In 2000, you had intrastate mainline in states like Kentucky (DL CVG-SDF/LEX) and Tennessee (NW MEM-BNA for sure and maybe MEM-CHA/TYS--I cannot recall).

I'm sure you just meant for the topic to be about American states, but BNE-TSV/CNS/ISA on QF do technically fit your criteria. :D

In March 1976, I flew CLT-ORF on PI, with an immediate stop in FAY (Fayetteville, NC). This was on a 732 (it was actually my first 737 flight!) I think both of those flights are my shortest segments ever (I loved point-to-point flying pre-deregulation) :)
