Any info about Rio Olympics charters?

Tue Jul 05, 2016 11:16 pm

Well, i'm pretty sure some interesting non-regular visitors will arrive at Rio for the upcoming Olympics games next month.
I'm talking about commercial airlines birds, not private/executive ones.
Does anyone know where I can find some info about it?

Team USA will be flying UA to GIG this year, just like they have for every Olympics since the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid. UA even flew all of the Team USA athletes to the 1996 ATL and 2002 SLC Olympics even though DL was "the official airline" sponsor of both DL-hub Games. UA also has dedicated res agents for Team USA to be used at any time. And ever since mcgarrybowen picked up the UA account in 2012, UA has boasted that they're "Proud to fly Team USA" during Olympic season ads.

UA also has a new Team USA-themed safety video right now along with Team USA billboards at the hubs.

UA is also doing a number of 777 & 747 charters for an unknown customer. Don't have the details, but they seem to be heavily involved in Olympic-related charter activity.

Tell me that UA 747 is flying there and I will divorce my wife and move tonight for a camping tent next to GIG's fence to wait for it.

UA ran many charters from NY to Sochi for the last Olympics, using their 747 charter aircraft, that I think has been retired. I am sure they will run many charters this Olympics too.

Apparently there are plenty of interesting movements right now, just filter GIG at FR24 and you'll see KL, JL, NH and LX 77W, QF 744 and AC 77L. Right now 11pm LT

From another site I read that VH-OEJ has special decals applied for bringing the Olympic team home but It went tech in SFO the other day. So VH-OEG was sent to GIG without any decals.

Team GB are flying home from Rio on a specially chartered BA 747 G-CIVA, flight BA2016, with a gold painted nose and special decals added too. Due to touch down at LHR in about 3 hours.

VH-OEG positioned from SFO to SCL during the evening of the 21st of August. It then positioned to GIG on the afternoon of the 22nd of August and then departed with athletes on board in the evening and arrived 135am local time today in SCL. It is expected to depart SCL today and arrive in SYD tomorrow (Wednesday).

Due to the tech issue with VH-OEJ the QF74 SFO-SYD flight was cancelled on the 20th of August, instead it operated the QF74 flight back to SYD on the 21st of August. This was the second technical issue that VH-OEJ has had in the past week

The BA2016 charter flight has been a massive PR coup for BA. Lots of coverage on BBC News and Sky News.

At the moment there's a few charters in the air:
- AZ 6673, a 772 about to touch down in FCO
- JL 8826, a 77W is somewhere over France
- KL 9896, 77W
- NH 2020, 77W
- LX 93, 77W
- AF 4001, 77W
- SU 7151, 77W
- J2 5102, 345 (This is Azerbaijan, heading to GYD)

Yesterday I spotted
- Uzbekistan airways with unknown destination. I don't think it could have made it to TAS nonstop
- an OS 767 charter doing GIG-BUD
- a KE charter over Nigeria
and a few more that I can't remember right now. Must have been fun at GIG yesterday!

After the Lufthansa 747 "Siegerflieger" (winners flyer / plane) for the 2014 world cup winning football team, now LH has a second 747-8i in the Siegerflieger-livery, this time for the Olympic team coming home. Got a lot of media coverage here in Germany, I guess good marketing campaign for LH.

Shame the 747 wasn't in the new white and crest livery. Would have added some extra sparkle.

The Dutch Team was brought home with KLM's #OrangePride 777-300ER PH-BVA. Flight KL9896.
The Boeing was greeted by two F-16 fighter aircraft from the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) that only left the plane right before it touched down on the Buitenvelderbaan at Schiphol.
The Dutch Royal Family was also on this flight; they escaped the press by a mobile stairway on the other side of the Boeing and fled off in their Audi's.

This was a special flight just for #TeamNL; the regular daily flight operated by PH-BVN is just above Cornwall at the moment.

It really disapoints me how little effort BA have put in with regards to the ammendments they have made to the aircraft. Compared to London 2012 where some aircraft were painted in the firebird and dove liveries. A bit of paint to the nose and some stickers is pathetic compared to other airlines.

Agreed.
If you compare with other nations and their flag carriers, I assume BA simply didn't care about the Olympics.
Maybe they find those fancy GB team sneakers were enough.
I'm pretty sure Mr.Branson would have made a great job if was asked to...

No charter. The team is flying on commercial flights. Actually some of the athletes already left Rio before the closing ceremony.

In 2012, London was the host so BA was a sponsor and decorated their planes with the highly elaborate designs to promote the games. I'm not justifying their lack of effort this year, just explaining the increased effort four years ago

I am pretty sure VS would have been invited to tender for the role as official airline to Team GB - just in the same way as they were able to bid for BMI when it was sold - and like the BD sale it would seem their 'bid' lost out to BA. I know they were the official airline to the England Football team for the South Africa world cup - maybe after that less than sparkling performance by England they decided sports sponsorship was not for them.

If VS were never invited to tender then apologies for my comments - and they should have been.

Having said all that BA have had plenty of free advertising in the last day or so on the back of the return flight and, extra decals on or not on the plane the golden nose got plenty of publicity. BA are probably very happy about the publicity and the enthusiasm of the returning athletes about how BA treated them.

The Paralympics are also over; British Airways has send their G-CIVA again to get the athletes back.
KLM's #OrangePride PH-BVA 777-300ER is underway.
The KLM bird is (again) expected to be greeted by two F-16 Fighting Falcon's on return to the Netherlands.

I don't know about the others.

EDIT: KLM bird at Rio:

In addition to flying Team GB home from the Olympic Games on 22 August BA 744 G-CIVA also flew Team GB home from the Paralympic Games on 19 September. The livery, titling and aircraft name were the same for both flights except for the second flight the following changes to the titling were made:

'#BAckSupercharged' replaced the '#GreattobeBAck' titling

The Team GB Paralympic logo was substituted for the Team GB Olympic logo.

The three Paralympic Agitos were substituted for the five Olympic Rings

These changes have not received the same very wide media publicity as that of the Olympic GB Team's return as, of course, the Paralympians deplaned using an air bridge and not the air steps used by their Olympian colleagues.
