FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Not sad to see more RJ routes disappear, especially when some of the competition runs mainline. That being said, there come a time when having such a thin schedule, on relatively short domestic routes, is just asking customers to pick a competitor with better frequency.

Enilra, thank you for taking the time to put this information together every week.

Like most ANet members, I've largely stopped visiting this website since the redesign, because the design of this website is so annoying now. Were it not for your weekly OAG change reports, I might not visit at all.

I want to echo the appreciation for these posts. Long time lurker, but I look forward to seeing these every week.

It's great to see B6 finally expanding at MSY with 2x BOS extended through the winter and the new FLL service. Now might be a good time to try MSY-MCO - WN has shrunk their service and F9 is just a few times a week and could probably be pushed out of the market.

That suggests that the look of the site is more important to you than the content. I'll take content any day - but then I never liked the blue background - LOL.

Well, possibly.

But at "just a few times a week" why would anyone bother to try and push Frontier out of the market? Does JetBlue really care about - or need - Frontier's low-end crowd?

Not so much the look as the functionality (or lack thereof). If you depart, Enilria, let us know where you go.

I agree with you that content is far more important than the look of a website, but the problem is that the new look of the site makes the content very hard to read. The words show up as light grey on a white background on my Dell laptop, which strains my eyes. Also, the old version of the website clearly indicated which threads had new posts since the last time I visited the website, and which posts were new within each thread. The new design doesn't do that. Finally, as I'm scrolling down, ads appear and disappear over the web site's text, which is really aggravating because it makes it harder to read the text.

I realize that the only reason the web site was redesigned was to make the text on the site almost invisible, so that the ads would stand out more. However, by making the text almost invisible, fewer people visit the web site, which in turn reduces the number of people who view, and click on, the ads.

It's easy enough to change the colour of the font to black (and to change the size of the font), as several of us are doing. At least you'd be able to read your own posts and a few others. I'm typing in black font now, but I could as easily be typing in red. Or blue.

This site also clearly indicates which threads have new posts, the presence of the asterisk * immediately before the thread title tells you that, click on it and it will take you to the first unread post, and if the * isn't there, there are no new posts. If you have any threads bookmarked, notification of new posts (and also posts in which you are mentioned) will appear in the little bell immediately to the left of "Welcome WA707at MSP." You can click on "first unread post" once you have opened the thread and clicking on the blank five point star (top right hand) will bookmark the thread for you.

I accept that it takes a little getting used to (and some investigation) but when I first joined a.net yonks ago, the old site, that took a little getting used to as well. I can now do everything I've ever been able to do on the old site and a lot of it is a little easier, I find.

The color doesn't matter. It's the quoting system which is terrible and is the biggest problem by far, and while you don't, I have to re-login every 5 minutes which snaps you out of where you were and requires navigating back over and over again.

While LAS-NRT makes some sense because of limited options from NRT to LAS, the argument is much harder on PDX-LAS.

Agreed on the text, I've made that point. They say that is in progress for fix, but it is just one of my issues.

The biggest weakness of the old site was the mobile capability and this is even worse.

Personally, I think the replies to your always appreciated efforts have dwindled because recent sked updates just haven't been very interesting. Lots of hub trims and not much in the way of dramatic changes of direction. Capacity, both in terms of planes and airports, seems to have stabilized. There's less to talk about.

But this is the airline business; that will change.

There is probably some truth to that. Most of the schedule updates in the summer are for slower travel months, which are inherently a bit less exciting. Of course, some of it likely does relate to the redesign (which personally I don't think is that bad now that I've had more time with it).

Not sad to see more RJ routes disappear, especially when some of the competition runs mainline. That being said, there come a time when having such a thin schedule, on relatively short domestic routes, is just asking customers to pick a competitor with better frequency.

It was what, a month ago, that UA announced frequencies in these markets were being added. Now, well before they start, they're pulling back. Definitely sending mixed signals as to what's in store for RJ flying at LAX. As to the FAT changes, here's what's happening: Mid-day DEN-FAT-LAX CRJ routing now becomes a DEN-FAT-DEN on CR7. Current early afternoon SFO-FAT-DEN CR7 routing now becomes SFO-FAT-LAX on a CRJ. Significant ground time at FAT for both.

Anyone expecting more changes before October? I would think so.

Why is DL opening a focus city in Vegas? To support California? And why support California? To support LAX? Seems very convoluted. I get that it's an MCO West strategy, but DL has gotten out of a lot of that MCO p2p flying. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Is this stuff at risk for the operator?

Your guess is probably better than mine. I'm sure low fuel is partly to thank.

Also FWIW, PDX-LAS is indeed currently loaded at 3x daily, but only from Jan 2-8. So it appears it is only for CES after all, although that is quite a serious schedule for just one week of flying.

That is so weird. I assume it is a filing error and they meant to have it keep operating. The other thread claims it somehow continues, but DL.com does not show it continuing. So DL is adding LAS from all of AS focus city/hubs? Not sure how that makes any sense, but I'm sure AS *loves* it. Maybe we'll see ATL-SFO announced soon. :)

The DL LAS flights loaded this week are all related to the CES - Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas during the first week of January. DL regularly adds additional routes, sections, and upgauges equipment to cater to the demand from convention attendees. The adds are natural to hubs, tech-heavy markets, and to serve certain corporate clients.

This includes:
LAS-PDX 3x E75 Jan 2-8 2017
LAS-RDU 738 Jan 4,6,8 2017
LAS-AUS 2x (319, E75) Jan 2-8, 2017
LAS-BUR 2x (CR7, E75) Jan 2-8, 2017
LAS-NRT 333 Jan 2,3,4,7,8,9 2017

And maybe a few others in there.

This isn't a filing error, these are special short additions, just like the stuff they add around College Bowl games, the NFL Super Bowl, or the Masters Golf Tournament.
