noisiest aircraft at LHR/LGW

Tue Jul 12, 2016 6:58 am

I have recently noticed how much quieter the A380 is compared to older types.

There has also been reference to aircraft noise in locating the new runway for London.

So what are the noisest, is it Meridiana MD80 at LGW.

I'm not familiar with MD80. Is it even noisier than a 747 ?

I seem to recall that it was marginal for Chapter 3.

I hate to say it but probably BA 767,747 nowadays, but saying that an Emirates Sky cargo747 took off a few places in front of us at LHR which was quite noisy.

For me, it is the whole Airbus A320 series. That howl when overhead is unacceptable these days. It is probably more intrusive than the old Trident or BAe1-11. I cannot believe it has taken 30 years to find the cause and dampen it. At least the neo might be a little quieter.

Well the BA 767 era at LHR will be over long before any third runway could be built even if the new Prime Minister's first act was to grant approval (and it is unlikely to be her first priority). Long haul 767 operation has just 3 weeks to go. The seven short haul 767s will only survive until 2018.

BA 747s are dwindling away too - another three leave the fleet this year. There will only be 18 or 19 by the end of 2020 and realistically the runway will not be open before then.

Yes, I have just left the 767 fleet after 18 years, sorely missed already as the best aircraft I have ever flown...

The A320 is certainly not the loudest. One of the loudest would have to be the 737NG which is louder than a 767 in some cases like when they fly over my house on approach though I am not as familiar with the RB211s. I know the RB211s are the loudest, but best sounding 767 engines on the ground. The 747 is loud as it has 4 767 engines and so is the MD-80.

2 ears for spatial hearing, 2 eyes for depth perception, 2 ears for balance... How did Boeing think 1 sensor was good enough?!

I'd put my money on the BA 747-400s. Even the LH 747-400s with GE engines aren't nearly as loud as the four RB211-524s when BAs birds take off.

Jeez. The A380 will be gone by the time a third runway is built at this rate.

I would say those BA 747s are the noisiest out there at LHR these day but as you say, their days are numbered

The reverse thrust on the A380 is bloody noisy, especially in the morning.

For some reason, could just be me, Aeroflot's A330 are nosier than the norm too.

RR powered 747-400s & A380s on arrival and departure have to be the noisiest at LHR.
Question everything. Trust no-one.

I think that E-Jets (E70/E75/E90/E95) are extremely noisy.

Agreed. Also bad on both arrival and departure.

737 classics are pretty noisy, you still see the odd one into LHR.
