WN Adds LGB-LAS

Tue Jul 19, 2016 12:11 am

Southwest Airlines will soon fly from Long Beach to Las Vegas.

The airline announced Monday that it will begin nonstop flights to Las Vegas on Sept. 18. Tickets for those flights will go on sale beginning Wednesday, July 20.

I'm not seeing the purpose of adding a new destination to then discontinue it 3 months later. Just seems foolish on wn's part.

This uses the temporary slots and is perhaps B6 best route at LGB. Good move by WN. Also the kind of route that can be easily pulled if they lose the slots.

OAK and LAS will do a lot of damage to B6 there. The lack of response is also very un-B6-like. I wonder if B6 is seriously contemplating folding its tent.

Those slots would be eligible to go back to B6 at the end of December. That's heading into Q1 2017 when Airlines typically pull back flying anyway. I don't see B6 asking to use these slots at that time of year either. Therefore, I think WN will be allowed to extend the use of those slots well into next year and beyond that is anyone's guess. I could easily see LGB award these slots to WN on an ongoing basis just to ensure the slots at LGB are fully utilized. Let's also remember that at SNA, WN fully utilizes all of their slots, so LGB has to know that WN will fully utilize all the slots they're given access to at LGB. B6, they're not so sure about at this point. Either way, shrewd move by WN to be aggressive in securing more slots.

Why not? They'll have no problem filling these flights. As SWADawg pointed out, there's a good chance WN will get to keep these slots beyond December. JetBlue hasn't fully utilized their slots at LGB in recent history, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Also, with that in mind, I'm still shocked B6 was awarded additional slots this spring.

I doubt they will let wn keep using it, ie, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
I bet B6 is garunteeing full use of all the slots to the city pending lgb fis facility is approved . If lgb agrees those slots will go back to B6, the next day they expire and point those aircraft southbound.

B6 needs to hang onto those LGB slots until the AS/B6 merger in 2018. ;)

There's no indication that LGB will ever build an FIS facility. If that is B6's strategy then they might as well turn the slots back over to LGB to redistribute to other carriers. It's much easier for an airport like LGB to just award WN the slots rather than jump through hoops to build an FIS for B6 that they may or may not use long term. If those are indeed the terms that B6 gives to LGB, then I'm highly confident LGB will award the slots to WN.

No indication?
They are currently studying it, supposed to hear from the city later this summer

I'm sure B6 is lobbying hard. You were also "highly confident" that wn would buy B6 by 2015. ;)
Regardless i think B6 will focus somewhere else in cali against wn. After they lost the bid to aquire vx, they said they already have plans for a west coast base that's not lgb. With as/vx and now B6 pumping up presence out in cali, wn is going to have their work cut out for them in the coming years.

Studying it and approving it are two totally different things. I also never said that WN/B6 would be in 2015 specifically. I said that WN/B6 would be announced in the next few years and I still stand by that statement.

Who said approval? You said "no indication", that article certainly indicated something.
I don't know what crystal ball you been looking into, wn buying B6 ship sailed years ago when B6 was much smaller. Even Gary Kelly said the DOT wouldn't allow it,they are too big now and after air tran, that was it. But believe what you want.

You may roll your eyes, lol. But a newhire friend at wn said Gary told them. And i know Robin Hayes of B6 said the DOT wouldn't allow it at their current size. S cursory Google search will confirm that by a myriad of analysts.

WN is king in LAS, there is massive demand LA Basin to LAS. They are going to make money. Whether its 1 day, 1 month or multiple months. No new planes, no new gates, no new staff. More money.

Great opportunistic move.

Official LGB LAS flight times Sunday-Friday
LGB-LAS

13:40-14:45

LAS-LGB
08:15-09:20
12:05-13:10

LGB-LAS Saturday flight times
09:20-10:25
13:15-14:20
16:40-17:45

LAS-LGB
07:45-8:50
11:40-12:45
15:05-16:10

On Saturdays WN only uses 3 of its 4 permanent slots so it's adding a LAS flight to keep 3 daily flights round trips in the market.

hmmm...I was just contemplating on FT how a B6 operation in DAL would do. Wonder if they are in talks with VX to buy the DAL operation?

So let's just say that jetBlue gets their heads out of their you know whats and decides to operate these slots (even at a loss) to fight WN, they could still operate a SAT only LAS flight worst case scenario?

No I think if LAS is successful they could scale back OAK to 3 a day and make 1 Daily LAS flight in JAN should B6 use all there slots.
But from all sources LGB-OAK is doing well so it's probably going to stay just OAK if they can't keep extending the LAS flight every 3 months.

VX is subleasing the gates from AA, so B6 is talking to the wrong people if they are talking to VX. If someone is flying out of those gates other than VX, it's highly likely that it'll be DL.

can't they buy the lease as an asset from them? Or could they sub-sublease it?
