UA Cleveland Operations

Wed Jul 20, 2016 1:51 am

United announced in February 2014 that it would de-hub Cleveland. The hub draw-down I believe was all but completed in June 2014. 2+ years later, I am curious as to what UA will do at CLE next. It remains the largest carrier there with I think 50-60 daily departures (peak). Any growth or thoughts on further cuts?

Time will tell. On the bright side seasonal service to FLL and RSW has been restore. On the endangered list is a single service to MKE. AA added DCA and B6 added BOS so those once cash cow routes for UA flights now have additional competition. I certainly do not see any growth from UA at CLE unless of course larger aircraft to its now present hub stations. Should LGA distance limits open I see those UA slots being used elsewhere. The UC is open and they have I believe 14 gates.

Hub Status at UAL is 100+ Flights per Day. Anything less is a "Line" Station. I wouldn't look for CLE to get much smaller as it's too strategic in the operation to close down. And? They're Good! Not very many problems coming out of CLE

I remember there was speculation that UA would cut down CLE to just ORD, IAH, EWR, SFO, DEN, and IAD.

Think most of that early speculation was wrong considering they're still flying CLE-FLL over IAD-FLL two years after the announcement. Not saying the hub is coming back but as stated above they're probably going to maintain a strategic presence.

Early speculation was that UA would close DEN in favor of IAH - not everyone has clear vision.

People have been predicting all kinds of things with the UA CLE ops. But they still have a portfolio of routes like MCO, DCA, BOS, SJU, CUN, and LGA. They seem to have settled on these. And don't forgot the summer only Sat. CLE-CHS for grins. RSW and FLL keep returning for the winter also. They still have a crew base there.

Posted on another thread:
Mainline-only load factors for April at CLE:
Southwest - 92.34
Jet Blue - 89.03
Delta - 86.88
United - 86.77
Frontier - 86.44
American - 85.57
Spirit - 84.75
(viewtopic.php?f=3&t=603315&start=250)

So, on weekedays, these numbers are likely even higher. Thus, CLE has very strong demand that UA would be wise to expand service rather than decrease service.

As UA draws down the 50 seat regional jets further, is there any hope for E-170/75's on the LGA route? Would UA trim the LGA slots and use the slots (at LGA for other routes)? I remember when UA (and CO before that) was almost all 737-700/800 on the LGA-CLE-LGA route (with the -500 in the CO days) and before that a mix of MD80 and 737-300.
