From 2018, tourists will be able to take scheduled flights to Antarctica. Argentina is developing the landing field research base Marambio. It is inhabited year round and is home to approximately 100 scientists and technicians. The base will be expanded to accommodate tourists,

I believe international agreements on protection of the environment in Antarctica may prohibit scheduled airline service. I can't even see how bilaterals could be established since Antarctica isn't the legal territory of any country. Various parts are assigned to quite a few countries for research purposes but it's not their territory and they can't do whatever they want with it.

Australia claimed soverenty over Antarctica in 1933. The 1961 agreement you refer to did not extinguish the prior claim.
It is interesting the two countries that ignore the Australian sovereignty the most, Japan with fishing within the EEZ, and China building a station and conducting mining activities themselves are claiming similar sovereignty rights in Asian waters.

Can't we save any one part of the world for wildlife & not humans? Do tourists need to go to Antarctica? NO! Leave something unspoiled for once, instead of selling of selling out nature for profits.

Wiki says the current runway is just 1230 m long and the distnce from Ushuaia about 1250 km.
Yes, I agree that unspoiled nature should be protected but cruise ships have been going to Antarctica for years. Even If the plans ever come true it's not going to be trip for masses.

Chile already offers scheduled flights from Punta Arenas to Antarctica every summer. Aerovías DAP serves at least one weekly flight to base Eduardo Frei with its BAE 146-200. It is quite a popular destination for Hollywood stars actually. Last summer Tom Hanks and his wife were spotted taking the flight.

And http://www.adventure-network.com/ uses IL-76 from Punta Arenas, 6-7 day tour costs $48150 plus the flight down there. They are adventure trips for the well-to-do. That company flies to Union Glacier Camp, which is much nearer the South Pole than the Chilean and Argentine bases. All in all there seems to be a lot more tour activity to Antarctica than I would have imagined.

Aren't those officially charter flights? Are they bookable through GDS systems? I doubt it.

AR must be desperate for cash with the Brazilian economy tanking and Europe not exactly having a stellar performance. Like it has been said, those trips To Antarctica can easily cost north of $50k.
