Why isn't Korean Air a five star airline?

Wed Jul 27, 2016 8:43 am

Hi guys,

I came across lots of trip reports of KE, as well as a lot of cabin pics, and I wonder why Koreanair is not a 5 star airline...
On top of that, their 777s are still 9-abreast in Y ;)

I will fly them in August, and I can't wait :)

Because they didn't pay Skytrax enough.

In terms of authencitity, I NEVER consider SkyTrax is a nice way of evaluating airlines. Look at the best economy award 2016, OZ won the first prize but do you know how poor their Y class is? Some of their 333/772s are 'still' flying with 6.5" PTV while every KE widebody fleet has 10.6/12 inch AVOD.

KE deserves to be a 5-star airline. But, Interestingly the one holding the 5-star title is OZ, in which they decrease every costs on service resulting in horrible in-flight meals (They don't serve full meal in Japan/China/SE Asian routes; Only meal box is served)...I'd have to say that KE didn'5 pay SkyTrax as they wanted. haha.

Could it be their old J class? Tbh that sucks, but the new one is stunning. If only we had the money. ;) But OZ certainly is a 4-star. Just like Hainan. JAL should be 5-star. Look at their Y, W, J and F. Just amazing. But anyway...

In the past Skytrax asked free tickets and catering and if you did not, it would cost you..

On Korean, I recently flew long haul 777 and was pleasantly surprized by their all round quality. Terminal, seat, seatspace, entertainment, staff, catering. I did an extra stop in Seoul to avoid the crampy 10 abreast 30 inch 777 direct flight (12 hrs). Saved ~$600,- too.. :0

I'll do so next time unless KL gives me a normal sized seat/seatplace.

Didn't they have a poor safety record?

Because the whole Skytrax is a joke, if you look at the current awards.
If you don't pay - you won't get any stars.
It wouldn't surprise me if airlines like AR get high ratings there whereas quality carriers who refuse to pay get a very low rating

In the 1990s yes. Since then they have done a tremendous amount to address the issues they faced (IIRC, with help from their alliance partners Air France and Delta). I'd certainly fly them without any qualms today, unlike a couple of decades ago.

I just watched an episode of Air Disasters (Mayday in the UK) re: KE 8509. That crash in 1999 was the straw that broke the camel's back. Investigations found that the hierarchy ingrained in Korean culture was actually causing problems in the cockpits of KE aircraft. The crew didn't operate as a team. Instead, it was seen as an insult to challenge the captain which hindered effective CRM. This led to a number of crashes. After 8509 KE really cleaned up their act and are now one of the safest carriers in the word.

Regarding Skytrax, I don't put too much stock in them. It appears to have more to do with advertising dollars than anything. Additionally, these airline ratings can be skewed toward someone's personal preference. For example, I was a big fan of PMCO. Their planes were clean and they ran an efficient operation. Their employees may not have been the warmest out there but they got the job done. Their service was very "to the point." They were never rude, just very "businesslike." I find LH to be the same way. I like that. Some like a little more flash (ME3, CX, SQ, etc...). Some like the quirky WN crews. Some just want the cheapest seat they can find. While that't not my cup of tea, it doesn't mean those carriers don't provide a good service. Sometimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I only had the chance to fly with KE once. It was back in 2011 JFK-ICN-REP in Y, and I have to say I loved the experience. My long-haul segment was on a slightly tired 744. I loved the attitude, friendliness, class and uniforms of the flight attendants. They made many, many water runs during the flight, and that included delicious and refreshing pineapple juice. The IFE was alright and overall the flight was a great experience. Only gripe is that the seats in the middle block had less legroom than the seats that were between the windows and the aisles. Weird, I know, but that is what I realized after a while. If only I had known in advance...

The shorter flight was on a 739 and it was also a very good flight.

I wish DL would bring KE up to Tier One or Tier Two in their mileage accrual system. I would love to try their A380 or 748i service, especially in business. Btw, a friend of mine who flies J-class quite a bit (mostly AM and JJ, but sometimes LH too) had to fly JFK-ICN a couple of years ago for work and she raves about KE and the A380 business class cabin. I concur they offer of the best customer experiences nowadays.

IINM though, weren't there concerns that this was part of the OZ crash at SFO too? Showing that maybe it's still a cultural issue with airlines from that region, if so. :(

While I have found their on board service in J to be very good, their business class lounge is mediocre at best. They only stock whatever liquor advertises in their in flight magazine. Want Gin? Bourbon? Forget it. Food choices are pretty meager as well. Cathay and ANA's lounges are what I would call "Five Star" relative to KE.

The simple answer why Korean isnt 5 star is probably that they didnt pay for it...
It's sad to see that the media and consumers have bought into this rubbish that is skytrax...

Yup, just follow the money. Or in this case, the lack of money.
