Chinese airspace being denied by EU flights to/from Japan?

Chinese airspace being denied by EU flights to/from Japan?

I recently read in a trip report where the pilot announced they were denied going into Chinese airpace on their way to Japan.

Today I was looking at flightradar and noticed that flights from EU to Japan were skirting around China and then straight down to Japan. The flight patterns looked a little odd.

Are there restrictions by the Chinese on flights to Japan from entering their space?
