I just read this news. I hope it will have a happy ending, but given the countries involved and regional politics, I fear we're in for another investigation that has rather important ramifications in the global scheme of things.

I checked the initial link and this report now appears to have been a false alarm - phew.

Yup, false alert per the Aviation Herald, which is usually a very credible source.

Does anyone know the reason for the declared 'emergency'?

Just because we have services light Flightaware and Flightradar24, it doesn't mean they're reliable. People shouldn't be immediately judging the disappearance of a flight on online trackers as an incident. Give it time.

Per the Aviation Herald, the cause of the return was a contaminated fuel filter that forced the crew too shut one of the engines down.
