Update on Hawaiian Airlines new livery?

Mon Aug 08, 2016 7:53 am

Is there any update on when or if Hawaiian Airlines will come out with a new livery? They said in 2015 that they were looking in to it.

Also, Hilo based design firm Sig Zane Kaiao has been chosen to design HA's new uniforms for all departments.
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

There hasn't been an official announcement on wether there actually will be a new livery. However, all indications are that if there is one it will be launched when the 321's arrive in the summer of 2017. That's the same time all uniformed employees will be wearing the new uniforms.

Why change one of the best liveries out there?

I'm not a huge fan of Sig Zane shirts. My opinion. I would have loved to have seen them choose Iolani shirts, or even Manuhealani. I rather like what the men wear now to be honest. Sig Zane shirts seem to always look very geometric to me.

Their current scheme is one of the better ones out there. I hope it's not too different.

I agree. But, if they follow the Alaska model of keeping the same basic theme, but making modifications to it, I could probably live with that.

This ^^^^^ HA recognizes the livery is beautiful and well liked around the world. The marketing dept said that if there were any changes, they'd be subtle and more of a refresh. They also apparently believe in the "if it 'aint broke, don't fix it" mentality. As for the new uniforms, I'm a fan of Sig Zane, so I'm confident what he and his team, along with the Japanese designer chosen, will come up with. FWIW, I was under the impression that Manuhealii was in the running for the project as well.

Keep in mind that the idea of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" goes out the window in the airline livery business

I won't accept a new livery, unless they can outdo themselves. Something that will be *VERY* hard. VERY hard.

Hi there !

Does anybody have any news regarding this issue? Apparently they are receiving their firs A321 Neo this coming summer...

I will keep my fingers crossed so that they do not touch what is possibly one of the best liveries out there...

Love their current livery but still a sucker for the red and magenta swooshes on the white plane body...I am such a 70's/80's kid. That look on the dc-9 was priceless.

I think its colorful enough.. when you see an HA airplane in the sun, it really shines bright But if you ask me what tail would I chose between Hawaiian and Air Seychelles , I would say the second one

Someone should have passed that memo on to Island Air. Their new livery is boooooooring.

Looks like the new livery may have been inadvertently disclosed as part of an upcoming diecast model release. These are from the Gemini Jets Facebook page. Image Image

So basically a different typeface and then the added wrap? Not a huge change, which isn't necessarily bad.

Hey guys,
A little strange don't you think, that Gemini Jets (a company I hold in very high esteem) would get the scoop and then plan models around this scoop, without ANY hints or images leaking out anywhere else? And then to 'leak' this scoop out on their facebook site?
Seems a bit strange to me...

Looks like Gemini jets accidentally leaked the new livery. It has been removed from their website and Facebook page.

I'm in the minority, but I've never liked the current version of Pualani since it looks like someone graffitied an eye, eyebrow, nostril, and mouth on the original Pualani. In addition, it doesn't allow for interpretation like the original Pualani or the compass Northwest logo that was interpreted as a N, W, NW, or compass pointing to the NW.

If this is indeed the updated livery, it's atrocious. It now looks like someone graffitied gray flowers on the fuselage. HA should save money and keep the current one.

It looks better on the 717 than the A330 but I prefer it without the lei (if that's what it's supposed to look like)

I'm surprised that the colors from the cabin didn't transfer onto the exterior of the new livery if this is in fact the new livery. I don't like how the engine cowling on the 717 doesn't blend with the fuselage behind it something the current livery does very well IMO. The wraps I'll have to see on a real aircraft to have an opinion. They could be a nice subtle touch to set the plans apart from other white fuselages or it could be plain ugly/awkward. We shall see. Also, the winglets on the A330 need the purple flowers, or at least the grey pattern matching what is behind it on the fuselage rather than at a conflicting angle.

I like Pualani's new lei on the tail. The old version looked just a bit too abstract- more realistic flowers invoke the nature of the islands much more effectively. I sort of like the leafs on the body, but they seem to be going the "wrong way" if that makes sense. Most liveries have artistic elements that slant backwards, or at least not forwards, so that it looks like they're being swept back as the aircraft moves forward. It invokes a feeling of speed and looks a lot more natural IMO.

Anyway, they didn't goof it up too hard, which is all that matters. The livery didn't really *need* a revision, but I can live with it.

The new Pualani is to be shared with employees on May 1st. Until then, I'm skeptical of these "leaked" images.

I was going to ask who Tommy Arias (signature on the "hi-res" image) was, then I looked at the username of the person that posted it.

Hardly seems official by any means.

Is it normal for airlines to give model makers (such as Gemini jets) advance releases of their new livery?
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.
Airplanes don't have isles, they have aisles.

It looks like they changed the color of some of the flowers near the bottom of the fuselage to a pink/magenta color. Overall, I do hope this is the new livery. It looks like a great update to an already great livery. I just wish that the HAWAIIAN title had a bit more letter spacing, but like I said, I think it looks great.

What I find interesting is that on the Geminijets website, under the "soon to be released," models, instead of previews of actual scale model aircraft, they are all drawings similar to this new Hawaiian scheme-something I don't ever recall Geminijets doing. so, this may be the real deal.

Titles could be a bit bigger as well, but not a bad update at all. Nothing radical like AA, just a nice modernization like AS.

Gemini have been doing this for months on all models. The photos will show up in a week or two.

The "hi-res" photo of the new livery has the old font. Not a great photoshop job.

That's rather rude. Its very nice high-res photoshop job, the effects he added to the aircraft look amazing. Just because he didn't get the new font entirely right doesn't mean this isn't good work.

What I meant by 'hi-res' was recreating the picture posted by Tom32286 and add details to it so it looks closer to a real plane rather than a flat 2D picture. Sorry if some didn't like it. Glad some did like it. Didn't have that much to work with anyways.

I like it.... just an update opposed to a whole new livery, but its fresh! I'm glad they haven't changed it too much, especially considering most airlines are going for bland euro white with billboard titles!

You can find pre-shaded templates online, you just have to add the design/titles. You need GIMP or Photoshop
I don't know if I can post outside links here but there is a person at airline-empires website which has lots of high quality pre-shaded templates available

Exactly. On that site a guy call 'Med' has lots of templates free to use. The programme I use is Adobe Illustrator for the designs and then Adobe Photoshop to put them into the plane.

Personally, the gray lei swoosh around the fuselage is unnecessary. The vibrancy of the color palate on the tail is enough and the eye shouldn't be taken away the focal point of the livery, the aircraft tail. A solid white fuselage with billboard titles in the new ligature would be perfect. I eagerly anticipate the unveiling on 01 May.
