Well they had a nice day for it.
The company hopes to be building 10 Airlanders a year by 2021.

I am suprised that nobody commented on this maiden flight so far...

This article included another interesting link: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-beds ... s-35694659

I think that's amazing: the hangars they are using right now for the Airlander have been built 100 years ago (!!!):

Hangar no. 01 was opened in 1917, the picture below seems to be from the late 1920-ies:

Hangar no. 01 today:

Hangar no. 01 some years ago befure rehabilitation:

As I've posted before, this isn't the first flight of this vehicle. It flew in the US as the LEMV, terrible from the people I know connected to it. Still not sure what they think they're going to use it for, if the US Army couldn't figure out how to fund it, why a private company will be able.

Despite the PR, I don't believe it was its maiden flight. I believe the same aircraft first flew on 8th August 2012 at Lakehurst, NJ

Apparently Airlander 10 hit a telegraph pole during landing.

I think this incident shows why the concept has never really been successful as a main stream mode of transport.

The whole airship concept just seems to be plagued with incidents.

Ouch. Very unfortunate.

But what pole? According to the video the thing just nose dived. As if it was difficult to maneuver it.

Interesting.... I'm sure they know what they are doing better than I but it just looks as if the front maneuvering engines either don't have enough rotation range/speed or not enough power.

Yes this is total "armchair QB'ing" etc. but it what it looks like to me. The ship nosed down and then didn't recover quickly enough. Probably just wind and aerodynamic effect that close to the ground but it feels like something that must have been expected/planned for.

I truly hope the project or others like it are successful. I love seeing a wide range of flying craft and this type certainly has something I like about it.

This is kind of ridiculous. Is there really any need to produce giant balloons that carry 10,000kg across the ocean?

They picked a very fitting name.....it was truly a very "soft" air landing! :)

ROFL!!! I'm not saying it wasn't safe, just perhaps not quite as safe as the other ones... Well some of them are built so that the front doesn't fall off at all.

A little update, the aircraft/ship, "The world's longest aircraft came into contact with "high voltage power cables" before nosediving on landing, an electricity firm has said.

Well that's news. Why would they be operating in area where such cables exist??!
