Virgin Australia @ SFO on 8/20 ?

Sun Aug 21, 2016 8:35 am

Saw a VA 773 parked at SFO's Intl Terminal on the G side around 9pm on 8/20? Does anyone know what it was doing?

Boeing 777-3ZGER VH-VPD positioned Los Angeles - San Francisco as VA9941 this evening for a San Francisco - Sydney charter. As a result no VA2 Los Angeles - Sydney was scheduled today.

Cal and Hawaii are playing in Sydney. I would like to go to that game to see football again (not Aussie football) but tickets are pretty expensive

Does anyone know if and when VA will fly Cal back to SFO? I'd love to be able to see that bird up here!

The game is on the 27/8 and VA1 SYD-LAX does not appear to be operating on Sunday (normally daily), so I assume they depart SYD on Sunday 28/8, arriving into SFO on Sunday as well. Aircraft has to be back in LAX for a 10:35pm departure to SYD (or BNE), so it could really arrive at any time that day.

I was just wondering how this works. Would an airline have lots of heads up about a charter like this and can cancel a regularly scheduled flight (and accommodate their passengers on other airlines..Delta I would presume here). For a large airline, it might not be a big deal but for Virgin Australia, canceling a SYD-LAX flight is a big percentage of their international flying.

What it tells me is that they're probably losing their shirts on the Int'l side and this charter was likely hugely profitable.

A couple of years ago when the baseball Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers opened up the season in Sydney, QF cancelled one LAX-SYD and the DFW-SYD flight to transport the teams on separate 747's. In this case, the sponsors probably picked up the tab for the plane and the airline had a year to plan. 61,000 fans attended the game.

The Sydney Cup is part of the New South Wales government’s efforts to bring an NFL game to Sydney — a dry run, if you will. Organizers hope to also make the College Cup an annual showcase, and Cal was among the schools approached early last year about the inaugural game — and the one most interested.

According to SFGate, the California Golden Bears made over $1m on the trip.

Cal usually flies out of OAK - is there a reason this trip is out of SFO? Better facilities for the 777, or customs, or what? VA doesn't serve either airport.
