HKT and DPS Expansion Plans

Tue Sep 13, 2016 5:06 pm

Hi Everyone,

With a huge influx of tourists to both Phuket and Bali, what are the plans by each government to quickly expand both of their single runway airports?

Whilst Phuket still has a while to go before maximum capacity is reached, Bali is already facing slot constraints during peak hour, and if tourism continue expanding at 20% per year, they will face severe slot constraints in 5 - 6 years, as annual tourism figures for the island start approaching 25 - 30 million (currently 12 million).

Regards,
Konstantin

They fixed that problem by proposing to ban alcohol.

HKT is currently being expanded, I believe it was due to open earlier this year although it wasn't finished when I was there at Christams.

LOL? Who's going to ban alcohol? Phuket? Bali? Both? Their airports? The King?

Bali's problem is not terminal capacity (which is easy to expand), but runway capacity.
it's pretty much slots restrained all day long.
the airport is also landlocked, which means a second runway would be near impossible.

HKT is currently undergoing construction on the new/modified terminal and it should be open sometime in October.

Bali is already pretty much full. Actually, the Indonesian government doesn't want mass tourism to DPS - the idea has always been (since the 1970s at least) for Bali to be 4-5 star tourist destination.

Bali is looking at a second airport on the North coast as a partial measure to deal with this. Some will rightfully say "i'll believe it when i see it" as this is Indonesia but that is "the plan"

The government is very contradictory. They want to make DPS a 4-5 star resort, and yet earlier this year basically abolished visas (including on arrival) for pretty much every country. Also, I believe their current annual tourist arrivals is just under 10 million (might be off on this), but they want to grow that to match Thailand (roughly under 30 million), which ultimately means A LOT more tourists going to Bali.

Having said that, anything that curbs what goes on in Kuta would be welcome. Maybe they should do the same thing Sydney did and implement lock out laws. Kuta is a dump full of Australian rednecks (bogans). Luckily, Bali is a fairly big island and has a lot of nice, off the beaten path, secluded areas.

Bali is attracting tourists who seek zen and nature. Both of these are quickly disappearing because of the development. Even areas like Ubud now resemble Jakarta. Unless they start developing inner island or Northern beach areas, more growth in existing areas is not sustainable. And even if it is, it will just drive tourists away since whatever they came for to Bali is no longer there.

Spotting in Bali 10 years ago, sometimes u'd have to wait hours to c a movement. These days at a certain times DPS\ runway looks like JFK's during morning rush.

HKT is already running at max capacity for years.
They started with twst flights to the new international terminal a few days ago and in a few weeks it will be up and running. Domestic flights are to remain in the old terminal.
There are plans to build a second parallel runway but that will take many more years to start/finalize

Bali, as in who? The island government is certainly not doing that if they keep allowing Kuta to be like Cancun on spring break.

I do agree that they need to develop other parts of the island a bit better. Tulamben and the northeast coast is fantastic for diving, but in terms of tourism infrastructure it's very poor. Seminyak is starting to be way too crowded and the traffic there resembles Jakarta. Canggu is starting to develop a bit more, but soon it will be like Seminyak.

Having said that, I actually really enjoy going to places like Tulamben. No bars or touristy restaurants. Just peace and quiet, early nights, and early morning dives :)

I flew out of DPS yesterday afternoon around 4 pm on CX. Every gate was taken and there were a bunch of mostly LCCs at hardstands. But I really had to chuckle when we taxied out to the runway and there were seven planes in front of us. I think it was Bali's equivalent to LGA at 5 on a Friday! :)

The only Zen in Bali these days is bought from the guys who try and sell you Viagra in Kuta.

The issue isn't concrete and taxiways in Bali, but ATC spacing requirements which are utterly pathetic and create huge unnecessary departure hold times.

CAPA mentioned last week that Garuda are upgaguing most of their Chinese services from Bali from 330s to 77Ws. HKG went from 738 to 330 earlier this year. China airlines are doing same.

I travelled through HKT over the last 2 weeks, at the airport and around Phuket there were billboards advertising opening of the new terminal 16 September...however by last Saturday when I left things looked not all that finished off yet...
Both times the airport seemed to be somewhat quiet to me, arriving we were the only international flight and there were 3 other narrowbodies on the ground. When departing there were a Thai 772, Aeroflot A333 and 767 I'm not sure off (Pegasus or something, but not Pegasus of Turkey, green and blue colour), then a PG ATR and our PG A320 to BKK...of which we were suppose to be on a later flight which got cancelled due to low load and put on the earlier one...and still we were only about 50 pax.
