SFO-OAK diversions

Tue Sep 13, 2016 10:22 pm

Hi all -

I'm noticing that both LH 454 & SK 935 diverted to OAK (I actually saw the SK flight flying right toward OAK with gear down). Anyone know why? It's not foggy today.

They did issue a severe drizzle alert in our area this morning (not kidding, I actually heard that on the radio this morning). It is SFO after all; it doesn't take much.

OAK diversions are always a source of frustration for those of us who live in the Eastbay and can't get off the jet and have to wait it out for the final trek to SFO- just to huff it back over again. Normally you don't want to hear a pilot tell flight attendants to 'prepare for landing' while the aircraft is just taking off. Shortest 9 minute flight I was ever on!

Interesting - although 45 minutes ago the SK flight descended through beautifully clear skies with just a few puffy clouds. But yeah, it doesn't take much at SFO.

Wind problems at SFO and low fuel for LH 454, SK 935, EK 225. ATC was trying to figure out where to park em. Only other time I recall A380s at OAK was for the Asiana crash, but I may have missed some other more mundane diversions like today.

Edit - Looks like also a JetBlue A321, United 738 and ATC mentioned Southwest planes but those aren't currently scheduled for the OAK-SFO run.

I was listening to SFO Twr as LH454 was on finals to 28R. The wind was 090 at 10-15 kts. i.e. there was a tailwind component. A few miles out the LH pilot mentioned they have a 10 kt tailwind limit. The pilot called the go-around because of a 15 kt tailwind. The a/c flew around offshore for a while then they decided the wind was not changing so diverted to OAK (OAK was using 12 so no tailwind issue). Once they landed at OAK, they had problems finding stairs high enough to disembark the passengers! Curiously, AF84 (also an A380) landed at SFO with no problems while LH454 was holding, and the wind had not changed. SFO is now using 19 and LH454 just flew OAK-SFO and landed at 1525. The outbound flight back to FRA is listed as 2:20 late. I wonder if they found stairs at OAK and the passengers disembarked, or whether they stayed on board for the return to SFO?

Anybody aware of why SK935 is on W1?
He's coming right at us!

Logically it's probably also the longest ;)

They stayed on the aircraft. The stairs are used just in case there is an emgency on the aircraft that might develop. They would need CBP approval to disembark.

Does OAK have A380-capable stairs? Was that part of any A380 certification for SFO? There must be a way for passengers to disembark that isn't blowing emergency slides

CM diverted to SJC, UA 738 and VX A320 went to SMF and as of now SK just departed OAK. EK and LH have all made the short hops back to SFO. Was confused to be getting out of school to see the CA 748 overhead after departing the 10's on a extremely clear day. Anyone have the METAR from 2-4 hours ago?

The METARs were showing winds all over the place today. Was quite the sight to behold.
