Well...in 1959 it would have still been New York Intl, AKA Idlewild

But that was my guess also

The hills in the background rule out IDL and the other obvious east coast possibilities.

Mountains by JFK (IDL)? Are you folks that seriously unaware of the topography of the eastern coast of the U.S.?

Nikita Kruschev's 1959 visit was on a TU-114 large turbo prop, not the TU-104. The Tu-104 was on a Canada - U.S. visit in 1958, dropping off the Russian ambassasdor at Baltimore.; two different events

It appears the linked photo in the original post is incorrect either in year or location, or both. Sorry I can't identify the airport, but since the year and first flight designation are incorrect, I would suspect that the location could be incorrect as well.

CCCP-L5445's first arrival in the US was actually on September 4, 1957 to NY's Idlewild according to this link (picture included complete with US Air Force transport and United DC-7 in the background:

https://utopiaairport.blogspot.com/2015 ... w=snapshot

It arrived from to New York via London, Keflavik and Goose Bay.

Just look at the people and the way they are dressed for 1959, not what I would call American. IMO they look more South East European, Balkan, Armenian or even Russian etc.

Pretty sure that was taken at KLAX as I seem to recall the same picture in another collection from that time period. Thanks for the posting as that is a great collection.

Could be at the Vancouver Air Show in 1958

There seem to be a similar set of red/orange stairs to the right of the 2nd photo as are up against the aircraft in the OP image

If you click the small "(i)'in the top right corner, it shows the filename, which is: CCCP_L5445_TU104_AEROFLOT_1ST VISIT TO USA_1959_BALTIMORE_45329_ZA_C_1024.jpg

There's that huge landfill off the Belt Parkway near JFK, that's a mountain (of trash).

Well I looked for it as I think it was originally a Jon Proctor picture from one his books or perhaps a magazine piece. Those could be the Santa Monica hills in the background just a little north of LAX??

All that tells you is that the file name doesn't tell you the location. A lot of things have changed since 1959. One thing that hasn't is topography. There isn't elevation of any significant size anywhere near BWI (which was the airport for Baltimore then, as now) in any direction. That photo isn't in Baltimore.

Pretty certain oly720man has it correct - Vancouver (YVR). Do enough searching on the database and you'll find a few pics with identical-looking mountains in the background...

You're more patient/persistent than I was in my odd 5 minutes between the things I've got on the go today.

Frankly, I didn't notice those were mountains. Probably thought it was part of cloud base. Oh, and I have had 3 eye surgeries.

Anything else you want to insult me about? :geek:

I think it's actually Vancouver, BC, Canada. These are the mountains, as seen from the Radisson at YVR.

Edit, added:
I think oly720man is correct.

Glancing through the next few photos in the series, many seem to be from Canada and of Canadian airlines. So I would say that there's a fair chance this one is too. (Love these pictures, by the way!)
