RDU has two parallel runways and two passenger terminals - one terminal near each runway.
Do the two sides of the airport operate pretty much as separate airports, with 23L/5R handling T1 traffic and 23R/5L handling T2 traffic?
Or does ATC use one runway for arrivals and the other for departures, LHR-style, with significant cross-airport taxiing?

Usually it's 5R/23L handling T1 traffic and 5L/23R handling T2 traffic, however it's not uncommon to see T1 traffic use 5L/23R and T2 traffic use 5R/23L.

To be honest, I haven't been up there in a while. I moved in 2009 and my family moved away in 2011, but with the new terminal layouts, I would assume they are pretty seperate.
Both of the terminals that are along 5R/23L are plenty capable of using that runway. From memory its around 7500' and a VERY short taxi from Terminal 1 (Southwest is the only airline there) and the GA terminal/Charter Terminal/FBO's.
Terminal 2 is everyone else, and is right along 5L/23R which is a 10,000' Runway. Also on that side of the airport are all the Cargo terminals.
Before the terminal renovations and improvements, quite frequently the airlines from Terminal 1 (at the time, Southwest, Airtran, Jetblue, US) would taxi over to 5L/23R. Haven't seen that so much lately.

Only rarely have I see an aircraft switch sides of the airport for take off or landing. They almost always use the runway closest to their terminal. However, the east runway is only 7000 feet long, so if a longer runway is needed the longer western runway will be used.
