Like it or hate it (or somewhere in between), the current scheme is distinctive with its blue-green fuselage. While it may seem rather boring here in Canada...when abroad it is a bold standout in a sea of white. If they are bringing back Red & White, I can only hope it is a variation on the original 1965 Air Canada scheme. The maple leaf roundelle is an iconic brand symbol for not just the airline, but Canada in general. Any negative space version (at least on the "Flag carrier"), shouldn't be sullied by an oversized tail logo. I have noted on the revised AC website, and here in backdrops at YYC, a layered silver-like maple leaf pattern is being used. Foreshadowing?

There's an A320 currently being painted in Dallas. Scheduled to be flown up to YVR in time for the February 9th employee unveiling.

To me the toothpaste livery is just as boring out here in 'abroad' as it is in Canada. My preference like many others is for something more based around the traditional colours of red and white with some silver detailing perhaps the cowlings and a little hint of black. Take a look at the final, pre-bankruptcy livery of Cimber-Sterling (2008-12) which to me is a beautiful 'retro-modern' take on the classic 70's Air Canada look, complete with black nose anti-glare shroud. Just replace the logos and graphics with AC branding and it's a good 'un...

AFAIK they have 2 A320s in Duluth right now which seems to be where they do heavy mx, but no A320s in Dallas and I would make no sense to launch a new livery on a plane that is going in a couple of years.

As I wrote on a previous post about this topic, I am already mourning the loss of this livery.

I originally hated it due its strange appearance (the colour was so different) but I grew to really find it a fantastic colour scheme. Its very Canadian...subtle but not in your face, simple but with enough detail to be memorable and unique. You can always tell an AC jet anywhere in the world. The best part of the livery was how the colours changed in the different light. Cloudy days brought out the pale blue in the paint, while on sunny days, it looked more turquoise/green. It did indeed look like glacial ice which it was meant to represent.

The interesting thing is what will replace it.

Yes, its true, if you check the website, at Canadian airports and at their AC jet bases, you will see the new colours already rolled out. One noticeable sign is the AC employee shuttle buses ferrying crew between the YVR base and the terminal. Gone is the baby blue colour scheme replaced with overall white with red titles, red rondel and a series of faded overlapping maple leaves which resemble the one in the rondel. These are in a taupe colour. An AC employee said that the new livery is very nice...and features these taupe faded leaves in some sort of a wreath around the tail. Gone is the natural maple leaf. Of course this all could be a smoke screen for what is in store.

I hope they don't change things too much. What would happen if KLM lost their trademark blue? Or AA's signature silver? Its takes time for people to accept branding and distinctive colours. Sad that all was for not.

The current livery is very nice, and I have a good feeling about the new livery coming soon. I don't know how to explain it in words but I just have this great vision for an updated version of an already modern livery. Maybe a bigger leaf that covers most of the tail and a new font could be nice. I also like the idea of adding red. When is the 737MAX supposed to be delivered?

Well whether its the 787 or 737 Max that gets the first new paint job is still undecided but one can safely guess that the next plane type to get the new paint scheme is the A333 currently in Singapore that was extensively damaged falling off it's supports while there for maintenance. It will require major repairs which means a new paint job...

Not likely the A330 will be getting a new livery if there is one. It would be retired too soon to be worth it.

You mean the "extensively" damaged one that is returning to service on Feb 3rd......the damage reported was a little exaggerated!

Wouldn't be surprised if they get paint when they're due for paint, they'll be staying with AC for a few more years...

Some 320s (incl. 319/321) will in all likelihood still be at Air Canada for at least another 5 years. I imagine the ones being painted are planned to be kept the longest. Given that there are three simultaneous employee events it stands to reason that there will be three a/c painted and flown in to the three bases the night of the 8th/9th. A 320, 787 (fin 801?), and a third aircraft....

There are two A320s in Duluth right now, so if your theory is correct which I personally don't believe it is, they will use both those A320s and the 788. One of them is the Star Alliance C-FDRK. I believe that those two are just in for MX and the 788 is getting an 80th livery which is what the rumour on it currently seems to be.

I really like the overlapping maple leaf motif visible on the website so I hope that appears in the new livery. Understated greys would complement the traditional red very nicely I think.
I've liked all AC's liveries so hopefully they get it right this time too!

Are there two AC 320s in Star livery? The reason I ask is that I have seen a *A 320 at YOW 3 or 4 times in the past week, including yesterday. While I'm very much looking forward to a new AC livery (as long as it's not Eurowhite), I can't imagine AC would repaint a Star aircraft back into regular livery.

Airlines have gotten better at keeping it a secret. AA and WN were able to introduce their new liveries with no leaks. I think US did as well except for their own teaser they released. DL's was only leaked because someone took some camera phone pictures of the 767 models being filmed on the set of their new commercial.

It may already have been posted. Where did these come from? Seems like they just showed up online, but who designed them?

One of the things I've noticed with Air Canada's designs recently is a slight "pinstriping".
It's apparent on their bulkheads (on the 787), their menus (from Trip Reports I've ogled) and most obviously with the smoked glass signage the use in their new premium check-in areas in Toronto.
In my mind there are so many disparate elements to work...and if I were a design guru I could get them all to work together!
When I think of Canada I think of warmth and friendliness, but also of 'Scandinavian' minimalism and sophistication.
Here's hoping Air Canada delivers! ;)

I really hope that's not it. These designs are incredibly boring. They're empty of life, resembling the bleak midwinter landscapes of Fargo! The logo in at least one livery is far too small and the airline's name on the fuselage is tiny.

I love their current livery. I had a long connection in Sydney once, and went on a wander around the terminal. When I saw the AC 777 I simply say down and admired it, and the colour for about 20 minutes. It's gorgeous

If AC goes for a new livery, I wonder if flipping the colors would really turn heads (a red plane with white lettering and a white Maple Leaf). Rouge would maintain the current livery.

The YVR one arrives around 1030pm

Depending on how well lit the airport is, it might be possible to get a photo

And it looks like the YUL flight just landed?

AC7176 landed at 19:29 local time in YUL. Just over 2 hours after sunset, so pretty dark. Still, I wonder if anybody managed any kind of photo during taxi. Would be tough, I imagine.

If Air Canada is trying to keep this under wraps (and they are), the weather in YYZ could not be better. Forecast after 8pm to be 200' and 1 mile in light freezing rain!

Land on 05, (just a guess, I don't know) ... then virtually taxi right to the hangar, well away from spy cameras outside of the airport perimeter.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

In a plane spotting group for the Montreal airport, I've heard that the spotters that managed to get pictures will be holding them until the 9th, same for the Toronto and Vancouver spotters. Some people have also said that there is a peel-off material covering the whole plane to prevent the livery leaking out beforehand.

The arrivals are all in decoy wraps, there will be no leaks. They have gone to very great lengths to ensure this, so it out to be really good! I have seen C-GHPQ in the decoy wrap, friend sent me a video on arrival to YYZ.

The arrivals are all in decoy wraps, there will be no leaks. They have gone to very great lengths to ensure this, so it out to be really good! I have seen C-GHPQ in the decoy wrap, friend sent me a video on arrival to YYZ.

One of those decoy wraps is on a A321 and has a star alliance tail.

On Air Canada's Facebook page
"Tune in February 9 for a big announcement // Joignez-vous à nous le 9 février pour une annonce spéciale !"

Could this be the reveal of a rumored new Livery .

I really do like their current one.

I'm not sure why everyone is so convinced that it's a wrap over top of the new livery.

It makes no sense whatsoever to cover the aircraft. They brought it in during the middle of the night to keep it as hush as possible. The cost for purchasing and installing a wrap is in the tens of thousands of dollars. The cost of removing a wrap is quite expensive too.

The aircraft is a Star Alliance tail and will continue to be a * tail.

Pretty sure C-GJWI wasn't previously in *A livery, at any point. It might become one now, and thus the tail is the only real graphic we're seeing. Of course, if you're wrapping a plane to hide the livery, there doesn't seem to be much point in wrapping any part that doesn't show any significant logo or graphic. Thus, maybe the dark underbelly and engines are worth noting? But seriously, what is going on around the cockpit windows???

Or, maybe it is all an elaborate decoy. A wrap sufficient to survive one flight wouldn't be all that expensive. There are films that are meant to be removed with relative ease. I have to say though, it would sure be crappy if the film removal caused any damage to the shiny, new paint. That is simultaneously a job I would love to do, and yet I would be a little scared too.

Anyhow… it's all speculation for now. Looking forward to the grand reveal!!

Just for the heck of it I googled `Air Canada livery change 2017' and the google preview for the AC Wiki entry had:

A new red and grey aircraft livery is to be launched in 2017 to coincide with their 80th anniversary.

But when I looked at the actual Wiki entry it says:

A new pink, yellow, and orange aircraft livery is to be launched Feb 9th, 2017 to coincide with their 80th anniversary.

Ha.

Another `disguise'? I can't find the edit in the wiki edit history.
