747 RA001 Bulge behind upper deck

Sun Sep 25, 2016 4:43 pm

I was looking at the image below of the 747 prototype and noticed there is a little bulge just aft of the normal upper deck, similar to the ones we see today for wifi and IFE systems. Does anybody know what is it? Does every 741 have it? Thank you!! ... /3979765/L

It was for a satellite communications link that would have replaced the Hf radio. Most of the planes that had the bulge had it removed in the early 80's as they went in for D checks as the system did not see widespread use like it thought it was going to.
