Qatar A380 commences 4th destination: Sydney

Thu Sep 29, 2016 6:05 am

Hello A.net,

As this news is almost 10 days old, I was somewhat surprised to see that this completely flew under the radar, and I didn't catch any threads on here, but if there was, feel free to delete. But alas, QR did not make near as big of a deal about the A380 upgrade to Sydney as they did when feuding over a one-off in ATL. Anyway, this marks the 4th destination for QR's A380 after LHR, CDG, and BKK. After dumping 3 daily A380's on Bangkok, maybe they started to come to their senses, and adopt an Etihad like strategy of flying it only on prestige routes. Nevertheless, JFK and LAX would logically be next, but with QR and AAB, you never know. I digress, but in the meanwhile, kudos to SYD for adding yet another 380 carrier, they're really sealing the gap between LHR and LAX!

I think SYD is only seasonal ? I hope MEL gets to see them next year, ideally QR would go x2 daily out of both MEL and SYD, but they are restricted by bi-lateral. EK, EY and QF fly their A380's to MEL to the Middle East so QR are sort of at a disadvantage there, and we know how Al Baker loves to show off!

I think QR is very strong in the cargo market here, and moving from a A 77W to a A380 would challenge their capacity. I think if they introduce a freighter service, or extra flights we could perhaps see 380s in MEL, they have the market, or later SYD. Be nice product upgrade in business

Withstanding what a beast the 77W is, I doubt they are really carrying much cargo on the flight from MEL to DOH. More likely it is being trucked to ADL or PER and being uplifted from there. Haven't heard anything about is being seasonal, if it is, it's an unusual time to be starting it.

I thought SYD would be seasonal, but it turns out it is permanent. It is QR; so there would not be any surprises if they change the operating aircraft.

I would expect Brisbane to get online soon; they have hinting that for quite some time now.

JFK won't be able to happen unless they move terminals or T8 becomes A380 capable. They have the A359 flying there so at least they have one next-gen aircraft flying to New York.

Soon after QR brought in the A380 came an announcement from EY that it will (from 2017) take over the AUH-SYD flights which are currenty operated by V Australia. So the Gulf competition is heating up.

EK is also upgrading EK418/419 from 77W to A388 at the end of October

Would love to see them at Brisbane. But all depends on the government increasing the bilateral. Would be a nice route for the A350 .

QR no longer fly the 388 to BKK, only LHR, CDG, CAN and SYD.

Why is it that they don't send them to Toronto?

I actually learned this through a thread on here, and then did my own research into it. there's a lot of flights between Guangzhou and Africa - ADD, NBO, MRU, and CAI all see service. QR was smart to jump in on this market as they see a lot of connecting traffic from Africa.

agreements with Canada are lower. QR jumped into YUL instead of YYZ since EK and EY were already there, figuring they could have a market to themselves. I can't say if it does well or not, but they fly the route a few times a week with a 77W, so it must do alright!

What is their delivery schedule for new A380s? I recall they delayed some last year, presumably these are being delivered soon.
