Mexico City (MEX) international flights history

Thu Oct 20, 2016 8:38 pm

Hello, hope you are all doing well. Started this thread because I live in Mexico City and, as an amateur, would like to know a little bit about MEX and it´s history of international flights and destinations. With new Mexico City International Airport looming ahead, the airport´s history has been of recent interest to many people, including myself.

I know some airlines such as PANAM, Eastern, Western, ElAl, Sabena, QANTAS, VIASA, LADECO, Czech Airlines and many others used to fly to MEX. So, no one better to recall those dates and facts than airliner.netters!

Thanks!

Anything in particular? MEX has seen service from Canadian, European and South American carriers for decades, first in the form of 1-stops / 2-stops and later on non-stops as ranges improved.

As with the rest of LatAm, Asia is a bit of an outlier due ties between LatAm and Asia not being nearly as close as say South America, Canada, Spain, the UK, or Germany. Being German, I like the fact that LH continues to be successful with routes like FRA / MUC-MEX, able to fill 747-800s and 346s reliably and profitably.

As with other LatAm destinations, the continued ties of commerce and genuine friendship between Europe / Canada and LatAm are a testament that LatAm can stand on its feet without requiring service that features a stop at the big brother to the north. Mexico can be proud of all it has accomplished and continues to improve as time goes by.

Of one of the most interesting that comes to my mind:

LAP - Lineas Aereas Paraguayas - ASU - MEX in the mid-80s.

Obviously a bygone route and era that will never come back.

Of course! LAP.
Let's not forget LAB. They flew for years MEX-PTY-VVI on 727 (series 100 maybe). Talk about an interesting long haul.

I think the Bolivian airline AeroSur had flights to Mexico before it became defunct in 2012.

IIRC...
I'm sure there are many mistakes as well as many missing flights here but this is to the best of my knowledge,
I also had to cut it short leaving many flights out as I realized that I could have been digging in history forever.
Anyway, I hope this provides a good basic, limited and incomplete start-up to look at Mexico City's airport history.
By the way, I can't remember or have found anything about LADECO or CSA flying to Mexico City.

Another important one was Air France's Concorde service to MEX for several years during the height of an oil boom in Mexico. CDG-IAD-MEX from 78 to 82.

While it may seem odd, Mexico has always been an extremely profitable operation for Air France. Today 50% of all business class seats sold on Air France's entire Latin American division come from the CDG-MEX route. One a few routes of AF-KL that justifies premium A380 service.

Absolutely !
I have "Mundo Ladeco" magazine handy and issued in 1993.
Mexico City appears as an international destination with 733, 3x weekly.
I flew UC SCL-GYE-SJO and that flight continued to Mexico City.
Their flights were ussually delayed and if I recall correctly they were in service from 1993 till 1995 or so.
Other routes touching Mexico City in those days: UC SCL-ARI-SJO-MEX and UC SCL-GYE-GUA-MEX.

Great list. Only a few omissions I can think of:

Alaska - Ontario
Mexicana - San Jose (SJC)
Aero Mexico - Seattle

Mexicana has served Portland and Vancouver but not sure if non-stop.

There was no backtrack in that route, look:

The Mexico City-Nassau leg was not a problem for the 707, as it was the one to Papeete.

Add Braniff to your list. In the 1940's, they owned a Mexican subsidiary, Aerovias Braniff, and later on the U.S. carrier flew Dallas/San Antonio to MEX, using 707-227's, 720's, 727's, and DC8's, as well as a flight that operated South to Bogota and beyond.

I've always wonder about Aerovias Guest flights to San Antonio. I've never seen them in a timetable.

In 1985 I flew to Mexico City from LAX on a Western Airlines DC-10 and returned on a 727. I also had the good fortune to fly on Mexicana from SFO to MEX. Great service in coach.

My mom was an international ORD based FA for UA that frequently worked the flights to MEX and SJO. She brought me on one of her Costa Rican layovers in 2000, which at that time meant a ride on UA's ORD-MEX-SJO service. UA flew the route with the A320 and enjoyed full fifth freedom privileges on the MEX-SJO sector, a route authority I can only assume came from Pan Am (like the LAX-GUA-SJO 757 service that also operated back then) given Mexico's protectionist policy - especially when it came to MEX. We left ORD in the evening and were not allowed off the plane at MEX, and then arrived into SJO around 2 AM next to a Mexicana 727. We departed back to MEX ~6 AM the next day, next to a MX 727 that clearly enjoyed a much longer RON than UA's A320, for a beautiful daytime approach to MEX featuring Mt. Popo and then an afternoon arrival back into ORD. I remember thinking that MX's more civilized arrival and departure times probably were much preferred by O&D travelers, and I believe UA dropped the MEX-SJO route shortly after 9/11 in favor of MX codeshare. These days UA offers a much more O&D friendly schedule on the ORD-MEX route as well as nonstop ORD-SJO service operated by the 738.
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

Yes, back when MH was a great airline with grand ambitions, and a large fleet of 744s... I loved flying them....

Never knew MH had MEX based cabin crews, very interesting. I believe the route was dropped shortly after 9/11. Did these crews only work the KUL-LAX segment or did they go all the way to KUL?

Well, the leg to Mexico City was actually dropped in late 1996, when Malaysia lost its fifth freedom rights between MEX and LAX.

At the dog park I once met a former Canadian Pacific flight attendant. She said they would fly YVR MEX and the flight would proceed to LIM. But with Mexican crew. But once the Mexican crew was short and she was asked to staff the Lima flight. Was that the case or was she allucinating?

Not sure about MEX but CP did have some Buenos Aires-based cabin crew for a while. They operated the EZE-SCL-LIM sectors. However, if memory correct, they were Canadians who were temporarily assigned to EZE.

Lauda Air 777-200ER service? I dunno if there was a stop between MEX and VIE and where that was.
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

Never knew MH had MEX based cabin crews, very interesting. I believe the route was dropped shortly after 9/11. Did these crews only work the KUL-LAX segment or did they go all the way to KUL?

Those Mexican crew were also assigned to fly KUL-JNB-CPT-EZE . so i guess they go all the way to KUL
