Qantas Unveils New Livery & 787 Cabin

Wed Oct 26, 2016 11:08 pm

In just a few minutes, Qantas will reveal the product and first routes for its new 787-9 fleet.

There is a live Facebook stream about to start on their Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/Qantas/

VH-QPJ made a sneaky overnight trip from VCV via KOA in complete darkness and is also rumoured to have either a new/updated livery, special livery, or feature the new product and just landed in Sydney moments ago.

The stream just started!

I actually quite like the new livery - keeps all of the iconic design hallmarks associated with the brand, but the new tail and font look a bit more modern.

The tail is good, but they need more color on the fuselage and engines.

I don't mind the redesign. Lost the gold trim on the tail though. I like how they've thought about inflight photographers with the wingtip logos. Hopefully they'll not use an ultradark option for the electronic window shades. :)

Agreed.

A roo could be designed and angled to look like the letter 'T'.

I'd like to see how the QANTAS name would look on the side of the fuselage if the current letter 'T' was replaced with a red roo in a similar shape?

I was hoping for a route announcement! Disappointing!

I quite like the new livery, but I wish they went for billboard style titles. That would look incredible and break up the huge amounts of eurowhite.

Really well done modernization of their brand. Didn't notice much difference at first but after checking it out deeper I really like it

If someone saw the tailblob, absent the context of a Qantas aircraft, how many hundred guesses would they need to make before saying "kangaroo"?

Why does that matter? The modern Roo will always be on their tail or obviously in context with the airline

I reckon it will look good on the plane when it's taking off, but I personally don't like it compared to the existing livery, may have to see it in person I suppose, absolutely hate that new font though

I like it, nice evolution - classy. Proportions are the same, although I can't see the wingtip too, or the engine described above in image. Maybe that will change the colour? Looking forward to seeing this on a 380. Somewhat funny some aircraft are still in the old scheme

I like the tones of the seats, not too much new. Extra legroom in economy is nice, great idea having a built in iPad holder. Will look forward to seeing more imagines of the cabin, W seats and self service bar. Maybe once the W cabin is released we'll see a refit schedule for the 380s?

Surprised with AA in town, no route launch announced. Still the days is young.

I tend to agree, but I'll wait until I see it live too.

The retro thing, I understand with the 100th anniversary coming up, that it is important to reflect, but IMHO retro can be taken too far in the modern era.

Still very recognisable and strong, I do like the tail, but I think the old Qantas and Spirit of Australia text were better. But thankfully there is no huge redesign, simply no need. Red and Roo go together wonderfully. I wonder how a gold trim instead of silver might look though!

Looks excellent!

Only 236 seats though so we can expect LONG journeys for this beauty!

Also a little disappointing that there's no Thomson CozySuite but oh well.

Potential Routes:

Sydney - Chicago
Sydney - Paris
Melbourne - Dallas
Melbourne - Rome
Brisbane - Dallas
Perth - London

I'm not really a fan of the roo stuck on the engines, looks more like an after thought rather than intention. I wonder what it would look like with red engines!

Looks fine to me, if a bit underwhelming. The font looks more corporate compared to the previous one, and the kangaroo is slightly more amorphous and less distinctive than before. But at least it's evolutionary and not a bland redesign like JL/MU/AY/IB.

Is there an accidental reveal of another retro roo?? The VJet tail in the image above shows a 737 fuselage???

I like the Roo, the flying Roo under the cockpit, and the silver trim. Not a massive fan of the new font but that will grow on me I guess....

I do not mind the new font - I wasn't a big fan of the previous italicised font, but it grew on me I guess. The new font looks more modern and clean. However, to my eyes the Q looks funny - slightly too large perhaps? Is it meant to be larger than the other letters or is it just an optical illusion?

Yes - the Q is definitely taller than the other letters. I downloaded the logo from qantas.com.au and blew it up. it is a few pixels taller than the other letters.

Why make it only so slightly bigger? It looks odd.

SYD-CDG is almost the same distance as SYD-LHR.

I quite like the new scheme, however it glosses over the real reason I was most excited about this launch. 787 seating.

Again QF has teased us with extra details but not the whole lot. Probably a good move they don't announce the full premium economy design as other airlines would be able to copy and counter much faster. Although it does leave some speculation. Knowing that economy is just stock standard with a bit of extra room, is there a chance we could see elements of the cozy suite in the 'revolutionary' premium economy? Much like the J seats are Vantage XL we could see a Cozysuite XL. There is still 3 seats in the centre, perhaps that could be the low risk road test of the layout. I know a middle section seat would be more appealing if I could lie my head to the side like I would at a window seat.

Any ideas on this premium economy 'revolution' ?

It's all right, it does the job, but I prefer the livery it is replacing - it wasn't broke, I don't know why they wanted to try and fix it.

I like the silver accents on the tail...gives the red tail kind of a 3D look.

Not sure how this new livery will look on their 380's though

I like it! I still like the old Kangaroo better though. The new kangaroo seems like the artist got lazy, and just simplified it. I also like how they will put Qantas on the belly. Oh, and the "Spirit Of Australia" font seems nicer on the older paint.

But!!! I am not a fan of change. However, it will grow on me. I am just happy Qantas is doing good. I am a huge fan of this amazing airline.

I think AJ wants to leave his "legacy" at QF, the last 2007 rebrand was still leaded by Geoff Dixon. I think AJ deserves some sort of 'mark' for what he has done for the entire Qantas Group.

I think this rebrand does bring out "the new Qantas", leaving its woes behind that has happened in the last couple of years. We are about to see a new Qantas generation unfold! :)

The Kangaroo is becoming less Outback and more Jurassic Park with every reincarnation.

I think the overall design is starting to look a little tired to be honest, this is a nice enough update but totally unnecessary in the grand scheme of things, there will come a time when they need to rethink the livery in its entirety as there's only so much "simplifying" a Kangaroo can take and only a few shades of grey they can try for yet another new font.

Why?? QF, and many other premium airlines (aircraft) draw their brand to the most recognizable part of the aircraft...the tail....the font is a grey tone. the new tail striping is grey toned and the QF engines will retain a red roo logo. .what more colour do they need? sometimes style means less is more ;)

Quite nice livery, is more a refreach than a complete new product.
Just two remarks:
First, the modern Kangaroo. was a good idea to give him a modern look, but i think that will be better if they add the small front feets somehow on the design. Looks that something missing right now.
Second, the fuselage. the plane looks a little tail heavy with this big red surface back. if they just add front of the Qantas name on the fuselage a simmilar design Kangaroo as of the wingtips, (see post 3) will be more balanced. same idea as the Air France logo.

The roo barely looks like a roo. I guess Australians see enough roos at home to not care. Not a fascinating livery, a boring attempt at modernizing it without daring taking a risk. What about the inside?

I hope so. Although I'd rather see a retro TN scheme before a third QF based retro roo.

I can't help to notice there's something funny going on with the regos in that pic. The '59 and non existant (for now maybe?) '61 retro roo are the aircraft. The weird A330 sans winglets in the 2007 design is wearing an old 767 rego. And the 787 in the 2016 design has a rego worn by a 737.

I like the silver tones on the new design. Not too keen on the kangaroos paw amputation. Not sure how I feel about the titles. I liked the previous titles but admittedly I didn't back in 2007 when it was revealed. The retro rondel under the cockpit is a nice touch. The red kangaroo on the engines is a bit garish maybe if it was made smaller It would look better.
