A save the line, for one year, order.

Congrats to both. UPS is a tough negotiator.... I can only imagine how good the terms were.

I didn't expect this order at all, quite a few of their 744s are still fairly young and I would've expected a 777F order if anything. Excellent news for Boeing and ironic how this comes shortly after we had two threads discussing the possibility of this order and the general response was likely not.

I was just wondering....

11 years ago, UPS placed an order for 10 A380F and 10 options. The rest is history....

I guess these are the moments when people in TLS and XFW try to kick themselves or bite into their keyboard...

At a line rate of 6 per year that's a lot more than saving the line for 1 year. That's 2.33 years to 4.66 years extra. With the 15 in Backlog as of Sept 30 - that's almost at minimum 5 more years of production assuming no new orders and potentially up to over 7, It's not quite dead yet.

Congratulations. What a fantastic news! I was hoping for a 748F order by UPS, but was not expecting such a substantial one! Now lets see what other operators will do which are operating still fairly young 744Fs in numbers. SQ Cargo, Asiana, Atlas Air, China Airlines. Together they should be worth at least another two years of production. There are still chances Boeing produces 747s in the mid-2020s.

http://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/ups ... 1027-00966

Deliveries will be from 2017 to 2020.

The history: Airbus cancelled the A380-800F because UPS and FedEx cancelled their orders as the delivey dates were pushed by years, because of the initial A380 production problems. The End.

This order is pretty much needed because the backlog is literally depleted:

The backlog is much smaller.

Total Orders: 124
Total Deliveries: 109
Suspicious Orders: 6 (4x Transaero, 2x Arik Air)
Built & Awaiting Delivery: 3
Final Assembly: 2
Backlog: 4

That's just 4 aircraft in backlog and Boeing is already building some white tails (line number 1535 and 1540 for example).

First UPS 747-8F delivery is scheduled for the end of 2017 so they might take some of the white tails. In this scenario the line is being extended by 12 units or 2 years additional production.

How will the Iran order for just 4 aircraft - of which 2 have been built already - make the program "good to go for many more years"?

A little bit optimistic as options are not firm orders, I wouldn't take those into account.

And as mentioned above, 2 of the 4 Iran aircraft have already been produced thus won't extend the production line.

Thank you for the details. I cannot get my mind around a low six per year economy of scale.... Does not compute... ;)

As you note this order includes white tails. I do not believe Boeing will make more whitetails. Thus, I believe this extends 747 sales life through 2017 and no more. I hope to be proven wrong as I LOVE the 747. I always manipulate to fly it TATL. Then again, I did the same for domestic flights on the L1011 and got over its retirement from DL.

I hope to be proven wrong. In my opinion cargo will be met by 777Fs. Cest la vie. For too many years every project had to break down to fit in a MD-11 or 777 that I've even glimpsed a blueprint. For that which requires a nose door, the legacy 747s are common enough to meet demand for the next 30 years. Cest la vie.

Very good news, congrats to Boeing and 5X!
I imagine they'll quickly replace the 6 they have that were built from '93-'97. Will they hold onto all the 744's built from '07-'08 for a fleet of 21 total or will they retire all those 744's by 2020? Seems awfully young to retire a purpose built freighter.

I understood the 747-400s will fly domestic routes while the new 747-8s will be put on international routes.

For a cargo customer of Boeing, this is a wonderful time of doing business. Their sales team is working hard at plugging the 777 gap, whilst also frantically searching for customer to keep the 747 line open until the AF1 replacement order comes through. Combine this with a depressed market for cargo aircraft and a -8F or 77F, whilst not quite being available for anything even resembling peanuts, are being made very attractive indeed.

Awesome news. As both a Boeing and a UPS shareholder, I'm very joyous about this.

I suspect Boeing gave UPS the sweetest deal of all time to sell these beautiful birds, and I have no problems with that. As I stated in another thread, an order is an order is an order. As long as Boeing is selling planes and making a profit on them, it isn't as important which production line they roll from, 777 or 747. The key is keeping the customer happy at a very competitive price point, and UPS is a large and important customer.

Long live the Queen!

I'm even more excited that the UPS hub at DFW is right next to Founders Plaza,
so we should have a perfect spot to watch these beauties come and go :)

Maybe my dream of British Airways ordering 15-20 748I's isn't quite dead yet.

BA's current new plane order book still needs frames to replace the last 18 or so 744's.
Maybe BA decides the best plane to replace a 744 is a 748 :)

An excellent time to place long haul freighter orders. A330F too! Not so good for airframes...

Any Boeing freighter sales opportunity will be pursued at this point (767 too).

Well they'll have to replace the MD-11's eventually. The last ones off the line went to LH cargo 17 years ago. In 13 years the youngest MD-11 will be 30 years old.

So what can a MD-11F and 763F do that a 748F cannot? Perhaps UPS plans on flying a 748F daily instead of a MD-11F and 763F... :)

Perhaps UPS sees growth that we don't know about...

Anyway, on the order: Good for Boeing. If you look at long term Freight; I think there are a lot more 748F orders in the future... Decades worth... if Boeing can keep the line open a few more years to get past the temporary slump caused by older Freighters and the economic cycles.

Have a great day,

I believe 1540 has been allocated to Air Bridge Cargo/Volga-Dnepr recently. 1535 I have not seen an allocation for, but is it possible that it will be one of the two Intrepid Aviation frames that were revealed back at the beginning of October?

Whether UPS takes a couple of white tails or not, congratulations to them and Boeing. This was a needed order for the line, and it's great for us enthusiasts to see a new livery on a 747-8 frame!

14x 747-8F will probably be used for replacement of the oldest 6 744 freighter aircraft and the first MD11F aircraft that are due for an HMV.

The UPS 744 fleet contains of : :
4 early production , ex Cargolux 744F aircraft, including the first built 744F freighter (Air france NTU), average age : 19-23 years
2 converted ex. EVA Air, 744BCF aircraft, average age 23 years
7 late production , UPS ordered B744F aircraft, average age 8-9 years.

The oldest 6 aircraft are due for replacement in a few years time, because every next HMV becomes more expensive, due mandatory aging aircraft inspections
Especially the two converted BCF freighters are more susceptible for widespread fatigue due increased operating weights above the original design limitations.

Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

Wow, what a nice surprise. So glad this lady still attracts !
Love to see one of them in Cologne.
I was born when the the 747 was born, she simply is among the finest pieces of machinery, america has ever built.
Hopefully they will be around in the air, as long as I live.

Everything I've read from the pilot chatter is this is all for expansion, no replacement of old frames.

At 6 per year does anyone know if B actually makes money on this program.

As the saying goes nothing happens until somebody sells something but then again not every sale is profitable.

I'm a shareholder so any solid info would be appreciated.

Don't forget there are millions of parts that need to be made and sold to support the worldwide fleet. The bigger it gets the more, parts, engineering, and support that is sold along with it.
