US A330

Thu Feb 07, 2002 3:04 am

Has anyone flown on the new A333's of US? What types of inflight entertainment do they offer? I'm considering flying to CDG on one.

I flew one back in November from PIT to FRA. The inflight entertainment was great - personal in-seat screens even in economy. They offered a choice of something like 10 movies, TV shows, videos, and music. The only thing I saw that was missing was the channel that shows a map of the aircraft's flight progress (like I have seen on UA and DL).

I highly recommend flying their A330s.

I heard it is working well, weights tons, consumes a lot of underfloor cargo space and costed (is costing) US Airways gold ...

Nobody bought the (Sony) system after US Airways. The vendor stopped selling it ...

This should tell something about the decision making process on US Airways....

As far as I know - US Air are the only airline to movies and tv progs on demand - ie not in scheduled batches like most airlines

I'm going to fly the 330 on the FRA-PIT route later today (11:45), and I've also been told that US offers video on demand in coach...

Anyway, I'm really curious about the airline - it will be my first USAir flight!

Please specify movie on demand ??

I flew US four weeks ago AMS-PHL
and they showed two movies (Good ones)

so i never noticed the demand factor.

Great audio & video on demand system & games on the US A330 !!

US has to leave 2000 KG cargo or 20 passengers at the gate to fly it around though ... who's paying for this passengers or US Air ?

Do you think this is a great system ?

cheers

What about cabin interior? Seat comparable to B767. I found that even in economy I can fit pretty comfortable in a B767. What is the economy class like for overseas flights?

If they prefer to carry more cargo instead, no problem. I'd take Continental or AA's B777 then. Customer satisfaction counts a lot and I'm sure US knows that. By the way, around 40 (fourty) airlines already offer PTVs in Economy, so it seems they all have prefered to carry satisfied pax instead of 2 tonnes more cargo...

Where did you get this info about the extra weight of the Passport system?

It's a system spec. SAA and AC ordered it to. I think it looks so nice some people had to have it. Rockwell pulled the plug after taking over Sony Inflight systems. Ask the tech guys on the tech-ops forum ..

I think that it's only the system US Airways uses that takes up so much weight. Many other airlines have PTV's, (UA, DL, AA, CO, BA, AF, the list goes on...) except the movies run on cycles.

I flew PHL-CDG-PHL on the A330 and the in-flight entertainment was great! With on-demand video AND music, the selection was very varied...in addition to great audio/video quality (unlike CO's PTVs). That's why I once again chose to book on US Airways for my transatlantic trip during spring break.

Are you sure about this? Even if true, I'm sure the extra cargo capacity of the A333 over the older 762 more than makes up for it.

Definetly not the pax are paying for that whatever extra weight. I'm flying DEN-CDG this May, US had the lowest price. So I'm flying via PHL for the first time on US and the A330.

I can confirm that US Airways A330-300's are great! I flew them twice (FRA-PIT and PHL-FRA) and video on demand and so on does really work.
US Airways will always be my first choice if I fly over the pond with an Anerican airline so I just hope the'll be around for a while...

US 330 only have seats for 266 while the NW will have about 295. Surely they wouldn't give up 29 extra seats just for entertainment? I know US is a 3 class, is NW's?

Knowing Northwest, they will probably order their new A330's with DC10 style interiors and no PTV's.  Big grin

Actually the US 762 was weight restricted year round on the longer routes like PHL-FCO but with the 333 it can carry a decent load of cargo and pax even in the winter. Its a shame U didn't junk the 762 fleet altogether and replace them all with the A333.

Since I flew LGW-PHL & CLT-LGW on US Airways A330's thats the only way to fly on transatlantic(in coach).

The comfort and Passport system is far superior to trips i've had with AA,UA,CO and BA.

If you look back you should be able to find my trip reports.

Long live US Airways.

Hopefully when US Airways gets their act together we may see some new PW4168 powered A330-200s replace the GE CF6 powered 767-200ERs.

Not for a long time if ever. USAirways has suspended deliveries of most of its new aircraft. Its in a serious enough situation without trying to take deilvery of new aircraft. If they were to make it, I doubt you'll see any new aircraft orders for a long time

I don't have time to type a lot, so here goes...

I flew Philly to Rome and back recently on US's A330s and they are GREAT.

I really really like them.

I do have a few complaints about US, but they are all minor.. service was great, flight crew was very professional, aircraft was great and Q-U-I-E-T, and the TV thing is a real gift to flyers.
