KLM last 747 to SXM today

Fri Oct 28, 2016 3:31 pm

According to routesonline, KLM is sending the 747 to Saint Maarten for the last time today, ending the era of that iconic sky blue 747 over Maho Beach.

Will the A330 service be nonstop both ways to AMS, or will it continue on to other Dutch Antilles as does the 747?

Yes, it already landed, watched it online. Not sure when departure is. A true end of an era for aviation photography.

Nice.

IINM, this will be the first scheduled nonstop to Europe from SXM by a twinjet.... and off of a barely 7700ft runway. :o

Just watched her depart on the SXM webcam. Man it was a beauty. In the F/O window they had a sign that said Bye Bye SXM!! also flight crew gave a quick hi to the people on Maho Beach. Totally awesome, wished I could have made a trip down to catch her before this last flight today but alas wasn't able to. Tower stated that she will be missed.

Has anyone got any screen prints from the web-cam or photos they can share for this event?

Takes some real talent to land a 744 on a short runway like SXM,
then do a 180 at the end of the runway and keep that big bird on the pavement.

End of an era for sure :(

Air Caraibes already runs a 2X weekly nonstop to PAR from SXM with A330 planes.

Another aviation phenomenon I've missed out on...

My cruise on NCL's Escape (August 2016) stopped at St. Maarten, but it docked at Philipsburg, too far away from Maho Beach and SXM. I had no idea how to get over there (it was way too far to walk from the city). Otherwise I would have been there at the drop of a hat.

Ah, didn't realize that. I thought it stopped somewhere on the eastbound.

Doesn't SS still fly them there?

Air France & Air Caraibes both have nonstop flights to SXM with A340/30 aircraft and now joined by KLM.

Arkefly I believe are also nonstop with the 788 as well.

So not the first one. Going to miss the KL bird at SXM. I have flown this plane every year for the last 10 years or so and I have literally been at every part of this aircraft. Will miss it!

The only time I've been to St Maarten, I just happened to be on a catamaran off Maho Beach when a KLM 747 landed.

When it was announced they were ending 747 service I went to SXM that weekend. Ended up not being able to get on my flight home sunday and missed a day of work, but SO worth it.

I feel very lucky to have gotten to experience the 747 at SXM, will certainly miss her next time I visit.

When I first heard the news I immediately started planning a trip for the end of September to go before the 747 flights stopped. I paid a little to much then I should have but it was well worth it. I've seen her multiple times on 3 separate trips, each time as exhilarating as the last. I'll never forget standing behind her, holding onto that fence for all its worth. A sad day indeed but Sunday begins a new chapter for KLM, and for St. Maarten as an island, with the new direct service to AMS. Mind you the A330 is by far the best aircraft for jetblast in SXM, way better then the 747 or A340. :D

"the A330 is by far the best aircraft for jetblast" why is that?

For comparisons sake lets say the thrust output of the A330 & 747 engines are the same. They aren't in reality, a single 330 engine puts out more thrust then a single 747 engine. Now spread that thrust out over the area behind the 4 engines on the 747, and spread the same thrust out over the smaller area behind the 2 engines of the 330. The same thrust put out in a smaller area will be a lot stronger then if the thrust is put out over a larger area. That's just my theory but I'm sure there's some truth in there somewhere. You can really feel the difference when you're standing behind them, In September we did Air France A340 and Air Caraibes A330 within 15 mins of each other and the 330 was a lot stronger. Even a 737 can pack a good punch if you're in the "Sweet Spot" as I've heard some refer to it, when on Maho Beach.

Your logic of thrust concentration is true, which is why I've actually heard the MD-80 is one of the best/worst to stand behind at SXM.

Nice video thanks! I was planning on going to SXM with the 747 but wasn't able to get on her in time, should have done it when I had the chance. But well the A330 is also a nice plane to fly on, so perhaps next summer I'm standing behind a KLM A330 on Maho Beach :D
