Weird routing HEL-Canaries

Mon Nov 07, 2016 8:49 am

I've often wondered this.

Why do many flights from HEL to any of the Canaries route over Ireland ? Example

It must add like a 1000 km to the direct route, and not all flights do it, at the same time with a sister airline

A lot more direct routing.

Just a guess - maybe central europe's airspace is more congested than Ireland's?

Also, France's ATC can be problematic with strikes, so there's a route off the west coast of France & Portugal that doesn't require any interaction with French ATC (so they may be aiming for that)? Requires some radio upgrades on aircraft...

Some airlines routing to Canaries go via the Tango routes. T9. T213 and T16. Which I believe is part of oceanic procedures and also slightly cheaper for en-route fees.

A pretty raw calculation with a Great Circle Mapper tool came up with just about 300km more for the Jettime routing (entered as Helsinki-Glasgow-Las Palmas) compared to the TUIfly Nordic one (entered as Helsinki-Las Palmas). At around 4700 to 5000km that turns out as not that much of a difference, particularly if the slightly longer routing can save fuel and/or ATC expenses ...

They've flown via T9, BEGAS to LASNO. Cheaper than flying through France, and not much longer. Also the winds on the day may make it even more economical.
