An 225: Engine fire during landing at LEJ

Fri Nov 11, 2016 2:53 pm

Just saw this on Av. Herald:

Emergency services responded but did not need to jump into action.

Some funny comments on Av. Herald, e.g.

It was the biggest plane incident of this century.

:I)))))))))

When was the AN 225 scheduled to Miami? That will be amazing for the spotters!

It was scheduled to fly Kiev - Leipzig - Keflavik - Goose Bay - Washington - Miami - Paramaribo - Iquique - Sao Paulo - Santiago. Thus a Sunday arrival would be possible (it was scheduled to leave Leipzig on Thursday.

You can find the original schedule on the Flightradar24 blog:

https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/antonov-an-225-flight-schedule-november-2016/

But the departure in LEJ has been delayed, but not because of an engine issue:

“Antonov confirms to us the #An225 delay is not due to an engine issue. We are still awaiting an updated schedule.“

According to some tweets the journey might be canceled completely.

Is the range on that thing so bad that it has to make so many stops? Is this a positioning trip without payload?
none

I was hoping to catch a glimpse of it at KEF so I hope not.

Looks like 2800 statue miles. Presumably that's at max payload, as they also list a ferry range of almost 9600 miles. However, since this plane is a lot more expensive to operate than the An-124, the main reason to hire the Mriya is because you've got something over 120 tonnes, so you can expect its range to usually be fairly limited.

Hopefully my GCMap link works properly, based on xxD328xx's link:
http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=gml-lej-ke ... cp-gru-scl

If I eliminate LEJ, the distance to KEF is only 2100 miles, which is less than the MIA-PBM leg they also have planned. I'd guess that stop is in there because they're picking up a load in Leipzig. It's alternately possible the relative remoteness of Keflavik means skipping Leipzig would leave them with insufficient divert range if something happens over water.

It looks like IAD also could have been eliminated without getting too close to max range, so I wonder if they have a load or unload there.

Once they get down to South America, they zig zag several times, so it looks certain they have multiple scheduled cargoes.

So will she load up and continue her journey to Chile or has the flight been cancelled?

Funny, I just saw her yesterday in LEJ, arriving with OS from VIE - impressive vehicle :)

Sorry for the bad image quality - it was taken out of the rolling plane.
