Re: DL livery modification coming?

Delta CEO Ed Bastian has made it clear in interviews that the livery won't be changing. He said (paraphrasing) "It took more than 20 years to get the entire fleet into a consistent livery and we're not about to change it now.

My guess is that any adjustments will be minimal, such as a new type of paint, as others have suggested.

YES! I would love to see a few planes painted in this old livery.

This is interesting. IIRC, the latest 'Citgo' scheme was announced in the first half of 2007 and applied to a few 737-832s.

What is the typical lifetime of a paint job, from a maintenance standpoint? I had the impression an average airframe could get 5-6 years on one coat of paint these days, before having to go in for a makeover. If that's the case, I would expect that some of the early Citgo widgets from 2007 got a fresh paint job in `2012, ~2013, and are due into the hangar for a third round within the next year.

I believe we just started repaints over the summer. I think we get 8-9 years out of a paint job. No repaints are getting done in ATL, all are done out of house. I think most are getting done in AMA. They may be sending some to GLH also, We have used them in the past.

We do have a paint line going now in ATL. 5642 is in paint now and it will be followed by 183 on Wednesday and will continue to run for the foreseeable future. The repainting will ramp up at the first of the year, with AMA having 5 lines going at once.

Sounds like DL really has made their mind up about adopting this new scheme!

So 5642 is being painted in ATL? Had anyone confirmed that they are indeed doing a slightly revised livery?

Ship 7005 has been at AMA for a few days now, maybe that one will have the "new" paint as well?

5642 is indeed in ATL for paint. All I can tell is that it will feature MICA paint.

I've been impressed with the ways the airlines have kept their new liveries
under wraps in this day of social media; A.net. Facebook, Instagram,..etc..

AA, AS & WN all kept their new liveries a secret up intil their debut's.

Fingers crossed for billboard titles on DL's revised scheme :)

It is weird that this is happening near a holiday. Has this been confirmed or is it simple heresy? It just doesn't make sense unless it is announced tomorrow or saved until next week.

The whole plane is being repainted, looks like either a one off livery
or DL is doing a QF / AS type re-fresh.

I worry about the gentleman that posted that video, I suspect he violated a NDA

I like the current DELTA livery a lot. It does not make me EXCITED, but it is a nice job. It is hard to resist taking a swipe at UNITED when talking about both DELTA and LIVERIES, and I think once UNITED has really truly improved 360, and the flying public starts to really feel it, we will see a new identity.

As for larger titles, I like the designs above, so long as it doesn't have the stench of desperation like when VARIG did it towards the end.

DELTA has such a strong brand now it can "speak softly and carry a big stick".

Well, as long as the DELTA titles stay the same, even if their enlarged,
the airport signage, nor stationary, or even business cards would have
to be changed.

If Delta modifies their livery: more red and blue on the fuselage, please. The livery is too close to Euro-white!

It almost looks like the entire fuselage is painted in a solid color..? Compare the wrapped engine to the fuselage.

Here's my wish list:

1. Update the widget so the the bottom portion is dark red and the upper portion is light red* (vs the current left side|right side)

2. Turn the widget right side up on the tail

3. Replace the current shade of blue on the fuselage with a darker shade, similar to what had been used on previous liveries

4. Straighten out the blue underbelly aft of the wing so that it is parallel to the window line

5. Re-introduce the slanted widget (now redesigned with a darker lower portion and lighter top portion) at the front of the fuselage, size similar to the previous slanted widget

6. Increase the size of the DELTA titles, keeping them above the window line

I wish I knew how to mock this up!

*Yes, updating the widget would mean it would have to change everywhere.

I've long thought that DL's current livery was a riff off of UA and Pentagram's 2004 livery and identity. There are a lot of similarities: all caps logotype with wide tracking next to a two-tone logo, a stylized logo on the tail over a navy background, and a white fuselage with a navy belly and engines. I loved UA's look at the time and thought it was very creative. DL felt a little bit like an also-ran to me when I first saw it, but I've now really grown to like it. If you squint, a lot of DL's materials look almost like something AF would do.

With that said, I really hope DL doesn't change its brand too much. The titles could be a little bigger, yes, but I don't think they really need to do anything. Trying to recreate past liveries would be a mistake, and I highly doubt DL would go in that direction.

Still, the fact that they're going to have five paint lines open at AMA, the same number of lines UA had at AMA during the post-merger paint, signifies that DL must be in for a big, fleet-wide livery change.

I just had a peek at it, and it's nothing drastic. The blue on the engines just have more of a glossy/ lighter blue look to them. Tail is the same, titles are the same [no billboard titles]

How about the blue underbelly (is there an official term?) and the blue on the tail? Or is it just the engines?

I see what you mean, but Delta isn't exactly a brilliant white like Lufthansa or Air France (when they're clean), it's more of a bone white, a little creamy color to it. Also I think some people don't see it as Eurowhite because it is not simply a white plane, it does have the Blue on the belly, although I've always wondered what the point was when it is so low down you hardly notice it.

It seems that, with the introduction of a new CEO, the tail has changed somewhat each time. This could be whats behind this change but not as subtly

They have certainly altered their livery more than most over the past 20 years. I like the current one. Now if only AA would make a "slight" alteration and make the nauseatingly grey American on the fuselage a dark blue or some kind of blue that is in the tail. Just my opinion.

Eurowhite means completely white aircraft except titles, tailfin, and mandatory markings (doors, reg). As DL has a blue livery, it is not eurowhite. Nor is UA, nor is LH. The new China Eastern livery is pure Eurowhite. AF is the classic and original Eurowhite.

It isn't as special or spectacular as it was put to be, but a passport plum accent can be made out, from a distance, it's almost a color changing paint if you look at it, at leased that's what it appears to be.

Put the tail widget back in its proper upright position! Other than that, the mika paint and the DELTA font as has been suggested, is the only other tweak I'd like to see.
