Hub-Scotland traffic for BA + KL in 2015/2016

Fri Nov 18, 2016 11:10 am

In S16 both BA and KL opened direct routes to Scotland's Inverness Airport from their respective hubs at LHR and AMS.
In addition Virgin Little Red withdrew from LHR-Scotland services in September 2015.
What impact have these changes had on traffic between the respective hubs LHR and AMS to Scotland.

Official July 2015 and 2016 CAA Route Data.

2015 - LHR-ABZ 75.662 pax on BA + VS
2015 - LHR-EDI 147.204 pax on BA + VS
2015 - LHR-GLA 87.441 pax on BA

= TOTAL LHR-ABZ+EDI+GLA = 310.307 pax

2016 - LHR-ABZ 58.120 pax on BA -23%
2016 - LHR-EDI 96.553 pax on BA -34%
2016 - LHR-GLA 76.096 pax on BA -13%
2016 - LHR-INV 8.541 pax on BA

= TOTAL LHR-ABZ+EDI+GLA+INV = 239.310 pax -23%

Conclusion LHR-Scotland overall lost traffic due to the closure of VS Little Red, this was not compensated by BA to INV.
------------------------------

2015 - AMS-ABZ 30.681 pax on KL
2015 - AMS-EDI 63.145 pax on KL + EZY
2015 - AMS-GLA 38.034 pax on KL + EZY
2015 - AMS-INV 3.564 pax on BE

= TOTAL AMS-ABZ+EDI+GLA+INV = 135.424 pax

2016 - AMS-ABZ 26.076 pax on KL -15%
2016 - AMS-EDI 66.184 pax on KL + EZY +5%
2016 - AMS-GLA 42.549 pax on KL + EZY +12%
2016 - AMS-INV 5.058 pax on KL +42%

= TOTAL AMS-ABZ+EDI+GLA+INV = 139.867 pax +3%

Conclusion AMS-Scotland overall gained traffic through the switch AMS-INV from Flybe to KLM.

------------------------------

..of course not, INV is a million light-years north of both GLA and EDI..it's not a viable alternative for any of those pax..INV is a self-standing historical route.
INV-LHR is no new route by the way. It was on BA metal for many years, before they transferred it to LGW; and before 1992 it had been operated by Dan-Air from Heathrow for a long time.

The only airport that can be considered a serious alternate for INV is in fact ABZ, as below numbers indicate - where INV grows, ABZ goes down..

2015 - AMS-ABZ 30.681 pax on KL
2015 - AMS-INV 3.564 pax on BE

2016 - AMS-ABZ 26.076 pax on KL -15%
2016 - AMS-INV 5.058 pax on KL +42%

Would a more realistic comparison be LON total traffic not just LHR? Also what was LHR traffic on just BA in 2015?

I doubt there has been of a traffic drop with BA at all. More than likely the BA traffic mostly moved to EasyJet at LGW and Southend, Ryanair at Luton and FlyBe at City and do they fly to Gatwick?

I don't think it's a really fair comparison to be able to draw any conclusion as we don't have all the data. If you've got it I'd be really interested to see it, it's not something I had thought of. I assumed it would all go to BA.

Thousands will have switched to the FR STN and BE LCY services, plus a lot using the trains

A great point by the trains with the recent change of operator.

I read this the other day http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/passenger-figures-boost-for-east-coast-line-1-4291078

Note that while July 2015 included four Saturdays (4th, 11th, 18th and 25th) and four Sundays (5th, 12th, 19th and 26th), July 2016 included both five Saturdays (2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th) and five Sundays (3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st). This makes a significant difference, particularly if these routes are primarily business and not leisure routes.

July 16 included 21 business (week) days. This is almost 9 per cent fewer than July 15's 23.

iirc, ABZ traffic however is correlated to
Oil price. As this has weakened over recent years, so has ABZ traffic. So not necessarily entirely due to inverness.
