airBaltic becomes CS300 launch operator

Tue Nov 29, 2016 9:16 am

Bombardier yesterday delivered the first CS300 aircraft to airBaltic.

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft today announced the delivery of the first CS300 aircraft to launch operator Air Baltic Corporation AS (airBaltic), the flag carrier of Latvia. The CS300 is the larger variant of Bombardier’s all new C Series aircraft, which is designed to carry between 130 and 150 passengers. The handover to airBaltic comes just five months after the successful entry into service of the CS100 variant of the C Series.

Entry into service is scheduled for December 14. A second aircraft will follow in January.

Exciting news. That's a great photo, too. I'll be interested to see how it performs and if it being in service will finally entice some larger orders. So much of this program is an unknown quantity, but now that airplanes have finally been delivered (and in the 100's case, had some actual time in service), hopefully it'll be a tipping point in the fortunes of the program.

Congratulations to Bombardier and AirBaltic!

I was keeping an eye open for the first flight data, but alas it was announced too late for my funds to allow on this occasion :shakehead:

Great photo of a stunningly beautiful bird. She will clock up quite a few hours before New Years Eve with that schedule published in reply number three. Hope some of the passengers will do a trip report :)

Congratulations for AirBaltic? Hope this keeps them in the air.

Btw, what is their current or future strategy? They have been wavering with different ideas in the past, not all of them sustainable, and were saved by the government, apparently not violating EU rules.
I hope them to ally with Sky Team or even be merged to AF-KL to break Star Alliance / One World duopoly (regionally monopoly) in northern Europe, but are they apt to join and would it help them to expand anyway?

Seeing that aircraft's fan is really impressive! Way to go Bombardier, couldn't be a better looking airplane in the segment.

Now for Pratt to deliver enough engines for C-series production to ramp.

OK, I'm amused by that sign. Looking at the shoes, all six of those people are office workers and not ramp workers... Just noting... (None are shoes for working outside in the snow.)

Haha, yeah I noticed that too. They were just given a safety vest and a big banner. None of them have winter hats either, which is typical of office workers :)
Quantos,

I love the seat configuration: 2 on one side, 3 on the other. Only one person is stuck between 2 seats, and those are mostly families travelling together, I guess.

I wonder how much of a problem that is for balancing weights.

DC-9/MD-80/90/B717/ARJ21 also has 5 abreast. As do Fokker 28/70/100, BAC 1-11, Convair 880/990, Superjet, surely others.
Do the CSeries customers so far have wider middle seats, as per Bombardier offer?

Not with airBaltic - they go to great lengths to encourage passengers to pay to select seats. I will fly CS300 in a few days and we got assigned upon checkin D and E for free while the plane was still almost empty. They try their best no to give out window seats for free.

About time Air Baltic gets new metal. Those 737-500s are pretty long in the tooth.

Got to be one of the best looking commercial airliners in production today, if not the best. I love air Baltics corporate colour as well. Lifts the standard white colour scheme no end

Yes, unfortunatelly I write my trip reports only in Czech language but I think it is in 99% understandable as sometimes pictures tell more than words.

Air Baltic has an excellent marketing strategy even they are a small company and half low cost airline. I think it is good work of their Corporate communications vice president Jonas who seems to be very professional. I´m wondering where he came from to BT? All staff were very excited about the new plane. It makes a lot when employees are so interested in company evolution. Specially such small airlines with only about 1000 staff are like small family.
