MEM Air Service Announcement Tomorrow

Tue Dec 06, 2016 9:39 pm

MEM Airport Twitter handle announcing that tomorrow will bring an "exciting announcement" tomorrow regarding new nonstop service. Any guesses?

Cautious optimist in me says this is another Allegiant add.
From there, I think it could be AA to LAX or UA for SFO per MEM's push for more West Coast.
I've said over on the BOS thread that DL could be a new contender now that they are making BOS into a hublet and the route becomes hub and spoke with them. It's just too much equipment on B6 with the numbers (and I think the tweet would have also teased a new airline).

If I had to bet, I would say LAX given that the PHX route on AA always had 20+ connects from LAX. That being said, that would cannibalize the PHX service.

With PHX recent being upgraded to an A319 I'd imagine they could run a E175 to LAX and a CRJ-900 to PHX and be fine.

DY said that they were interested in MEM, a few months ago.

While I doubt it's that, that'd certainly be about the most exciting thing MEM could realistically (a term used lightly) hope for.

The CEO of DY dropped MEM and MSY in a CNBC interview. Since that time MSY has landed Condor and BA. I have theorized that MEM could be a A321neolr type destination given it range envelope and lower seat count than a 788 for seasonal flights. There are around 8 million in a 41/2 hr drive of Memphis.

I'm betting that it will be DY. These 2 weeks I bet that they will be on a role manking a bunch of announcements. Now lets see tommorow what they have in store for us :)!

If MEM gets Europe service before BNA, that'd be pretty sad.

Although it would be nice, I would be shocked if MEM landed TATL service before BNA or even STL and CLE. DY starting MEM and MSY was based on Viking starting river cruises between the two cities, but that has been indefinitely delayed.

It's hard to imagine even AS. I would expect something from G4 or F9.

Maybe it's a Memphis to Florida route.
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

Southwest to Oakland? WN or AA to LAX? UA to SFO? AS or DL to SEA? These are the most likely west coast scenarios.

Spirit making an appearance?

Hopefully it's a "real" airline making an announcement and not just GLO (unless they're going to make MEM a largish hub for them with meaningful service to more cities) or another FBO airline.

They are not due at DY 2019, but the stated range would theorictically put MEM in reach of Ireland and Gatwick.

Protectionist Shipbuilding Laws have delayed Viking's entry. There are having a hard time finding a suitable shipbuilder in the States.

To go along with PHF's Elite Airways' announcement , 4x week n/s MEM-PHF, with continuation up to EWR. Fun to guess.

DE had already announced MSY at that time, so that apparently didn't mean much to them. BA had yet to announce though.

That, and as mentioned above, Viking has hit a few roadblocks in establishing their US tours, and MSY was (also MEM and MSP) were to be the flight gateways for that service. That may have had something to do with it as well.

The CNBC interview was in April and I believe it wasn't until June for the Condor announcement. But it's neither here or there. The main thing I think that would effect DY entry into MYS would be BA.

I just hope this isn't a resumption of EAS to Harrison Ark announcement

Long story short DL dropped MEM-YYZ and AC announced they were starting it, DL re-added YYZ and it ended up being something crazy like (5x daily to YYZ between AC and DL) AC went down to 1 daily and DL pulled off after weakening AC. They pulled out as a result and left MEM with no service to Canada.

GLO is an airline that operates Saab 340s in regional routes. FBO stands for Fixed Base Operator.

Aren't we also due for an update on what the modernization is going to look like? I feel like there was an announcement in the last few months saying they were going to scrap what had previously been presented in favor of something new "in light of BNA." (which drew the ire of many) I thought it was supposed to be revealed by the end of the year.

I'm still holding out hope for BOS before next summer. It just seems like the next step over SFO or SEA.

That is pretty amazing that MEM can get Air Canada YYZ service now that they are not a hub for anyone! I'd be curious what the numbers are for O/D on YYZ-MEM? If this route works, what's to say routes like SDF, PVD and OMA wouldn't work? Does anybody have a list of USA destinations from YYZ and their respective O/D to see what other USA cities might be feasible in the future?

I'm no Memphis fanboy, but I'm also not sure how daily nonstop service to a metro area roughly the size of Houston with excellent onward connecting opportunities is "nothing."

I don't know the RDU-Canada market that well. In BNA, I suspect yields are not great; there is competition from WS and a fairly large inbound tourism component - Canadians love their country music. I do think that they lose some connecting business without an F option, though. I typically only look at AC coming back to Nashville because of preclearance, and I suspect I'm not the only one who does not find the onboard product all that attractive.
