Winter 2016 Air Cargo Thread

Fri Dec 09, 2016 12:49 am

Apologize if we already have one elsewhere but I could not find it. Usually we have a thread covering air cargo at this time of year, discussing the cargo carriers and their operations during this busy time of year.

I will start of with a question regarding FX, which I am particularly interested in. Anyone familiar with the current status at FX and how they have been handling the holiday traffic so far? What routes are seeing third party operators to add capacity?

FX instead of gradually ramping up ops across the month as per tradition, this year went into a full-blown maximum schedule on Nov. 29. I'm expecting the adhoc and third party push to really gear up next week. So far it's just a lot of FX metal here.

There are 5 747's and 3 767's operating for FX this peak. 4 5Y 747-400F's and 1 767, 1 K4 747-400F and 1 767, plus a LAN 767.

FX has been running the usual 767 MEM-ROC along with an A300. The A300 departs to MDT.

K4:

1x 767 for FedEx - Active
1x 747 for FedEx - Active

4x 747 for USPS (CNET out of MEM) - Active

5x 747 for UPS beginning next week

That's 11 out of 18 frames operating domestic peak runs. Makes my job easy given I deal entirely with international ops; but in addition to those listed above, we're also operating several extra sections for DHL internationally.

How does it work then for the 4x USPS 747's? I thought they would contract the work out to Fedex or UPS who in turn would operate those aircraft for USPS?

One of those 747s is actually a classic (742) that Kalitta is flying LAX-MEM and back daily.

It looks like UPS has contracted a 762 from "Air Commerce" that's doing a daily MHR-PHL roundtrip http://flightaware.com/live/flight/CSB5 ... /KMHR/KPHL

Is it possible we will see Amazon try to increase capacity at their freight operation for the peak season?

No idea, but the aircraft is in Tampa Cargo colors.Looks like it's actually owned by Dynamic Airways, but no idea why it's flying under its old registration (N769QT) instead of it's last recorded one (N999YV).

There was certainly no 767 at SEA today at least before noon. It may have been mislisted.

The USPS supplies a "matrix" of volume/containers to FX and if they blow out their allotted quota to where FX cannot absorb the additional volume, they will bring in a charter 747, usually Kalitta to carry it. Containerized in FX ULDs, however.

Actually that classic is on the USPS contract with three other 747s. Just one 744 and one 763 for FX from the K4 end.

Interestingly, while as mentioned above the USPS operations are tied into FX in terms of ULDs, etc., the MEM operation is completely separate. The USPS flights all operate out of the South Cargo Ramp and aren't handled by FedEx.

Nolinor Aviation are operating a CV580 from YVR to mostly OAK and also PDX. Also had an additional 757 from OAK too.

UPS seem to be operating from GEG to YVR at the moment.

Cargo ramp at HNL was very full today. There were 2 MD11's and 1 744 for 5X and 2 MD11's and a 77F for FX along with the usual Kalitta plane. The airline I work for has been busy since October moving belly freight exHNL.

Looks like FedEx is retiring a DC-10-10 right in the midst of the Christmas rush. N554FE is currently en route MEM-VCV. She has about 100,000 hours and 32,000 cycles on her.

I'm pretty sure Atlas doesn't have any 747 classics in service anymore.

I thought I read a classic scheduled on Flightaware out of ORD it might have been Kalitta.

There is an Asiana listed at ORD as a 741. Must be a Flightaware glitch I read earlier about a QFA7XXX flight scheduled as 741.

Probably a glitch. Kalitta has 3 classics, one doing a dedicated LAX-HNL run, the other two each doing LAX-MEM and MIA-SDF.
