FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

I didn't do the math, but seemed like a net reduction for WN in May.

I'm surprised DL can't do more than 1x daily in peak season for ACK, especially considering US/AA is out of the market and I believe UA is as well (not sure about the latter - nothing is on the UA website yet, but maybe it just hasn't been loaded for the season). Though B6 has quite a bit of capacity in the market with 3x daily 190s. I guess they've made it work.

That's quite impressive. I don't think this has ever been 3x before, has it? I seem to remember it going up to 2x in previous summers.

AA is still in ACK seasonally. 3 days a week out of LGA, 5 days a week out of DCA. Not sure about UA.

The DL JFK-AUS news is a surprise to me, but a very welcome one that I hope sticks. The return AUS-JFK is an evening flight which I have wanted pretty badly for a long time. Currently the latest DL non-stop AUS-JFK leaves AUS around 1pm.

Similar to what happened with AUS-MIA.

UA DEN-COD nothing new. Just resumption of seasonal route.
All MW are already operated, schedule just extended out I believe.
Nice to see this every week. Keep up the good work and have a good Christmas.

It looks like the third JFK-AUS departure is operated by Endeavor, using a CRJ-900. At 1,515 miles, this has to be the longest CR7/9 route in the DL network, no?

No complaints about the addition, but wow, that's a long flight for a CR9.

Some of this seems to have been going on for a while. AA's placeholder for the schedule for the future includes X number off flights on a number of routes, but when they firm up the schedule (about three months out) several of those routes lose a frequency. I've been noticing this on JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO in particular for some time now. I'm not sure when AA last actually ran 13 (LAX) and 7 (SFO). It seems every month or two, in these OAG updates, the future actual schedule gets trimmed to 12 and 6.

It's not DL, nor is it a CR7/9, but UA runs at least some of its AUS-EWR flights on E70/E75, which are similar sized aircraft. SAT-EWR is, at times, an E70/E75 as well.

Did FL before WN bought it out, or WN since FL ever not offer nonstop service between FLL-MKE? AA also doesn't have a MIA-MKE. WN is big on both sides but I suppose it didn't help enough.

AirTran did fly MKE-FLL (and MKE-RSW) in the offseason. However they had smaller 717's and more coordinated connections over the MKE hub than Southwest has. Loads to both FLL and RSW for Southwest have been soft in the offseason and so the season for both has been cut to about 6 months of the year.

The E-Jets are a considerably more comfortable product IMHO. I wouldn't put the E jets below mainline narrowbody. The CRJs are a step down.

Southwest runs a banked hub at STL -- six main banks per day. As part of that operation Southwest has shifted more connecting traffic over STL, and in some instances that has meant new or added flights.

Looks like the middle-class passengers moved over to PUJ. The Casa de Campo resort properties are very high-end; those passengers can easily fly in their private jets instead of taking commerical flights.

I noted BNA getting additional frequencies to several existing destinations, nothing new though. I generally look only for it since it's my home port.

Wow, long-haul cut down from UA in IAH.

When was the last time United/CO had less than 2 flights/day to LHR?

And MUC dropping to .4. (Dropping slightly from ORD as well). Maybe that'll help some Polaris biz seat retrofits?

Yes CCS going from .7 to 1.0? Strange.

Love to see WN doing well with MEX. The fares have been rock bottom and I've loved getting to take a few trips down there to explore the city.

I think I read that the yields on HOU-PDX have been pretty rough, so good to see it coming back.

Actually JFK-SAT is the longest route for Endeavor (-by what? 15-20 miles?). Usually DL flies it but we're flying the route around the immediate holidays this year. I've been told in the past that the westbound flights have been known to stop in MEM for fuel due to headwinds.

I think this makes AUS the best served market from anywhere in the south central US to JFK in the DL system. Including B6 and AA makes for 6 flights a day. It will be interesting to see how that would change with LGA's perimeter rule lifting.

Seasonal suspension. Not the first time AA has opted to not operate the route during the summer.

That's a good get that Cody retains daily UA service to DEN during the summer in 2017. In case you didn't know, Skywest holds the EAS contract - it used to be flown 1x SLC (DL code) and 1xDEN (UA code) during the off season, but the DOT didn't like that and Skywest was forced to consolidate the EAS flying to SLC. The current DEN flight is unsubsidized and is actually a fee-for-departure United Express route (not an at-risk Skywest market), so it's kind of a big deal that big UA still sees value in this market. They flew ORD-COD weekend only a handful of times on the CR7 last summer, I wonder if those will come back.

I've noticed a lot of the CCS routes that had gone less than daily are now daily again. I wonder if things have stabilized/actually improving or if the airlines realized they cut too much.

With the completion of the new highway, you can reach the resorts in La Romana in 45 minutes of less from PUJ (and just over an hour from SDQ). With plenty of cheap flights readily available into PUJ (AA's flying the 333 from both PHL & CLT this winter), the option of paying a premium to fly into LRM is suddenly less appealing. Even the seasonal Canadian flights that for many years represented the lion's share of service into LRM have moved to PUJ.

I've flown WN down to MEX and back a few times and the plane has consistently been only about 50-60% full along with the rock bottom fares still available up until departure which makes me pretty apprehensive to say that they're doing well there. However, I haven't been back to MEX since they increased the frequencies to 2x and now 3x to HOU which should allow better connection opportunities to the rest of the network so hopefully that will help.

I will have to say I haven't flown on the WN flights. I've flown on UA and it'll be Aeromexico next month.

If the uptick in the rumors concerning MKE-MIA are true, it's going to be interesting to see what WN decides to do with FLL. WN's response (or lack of) could very well put MKE-DCA into play for AA down the line.

Considering WN has to retire all the classic's prior to bringing in any MAX aircraft there will be a massive influx of flights until the number of MAX aircraft on property can replace the retired classic's if that makes sense.

That's not at all how it happened. DOT previously awarded OO/UA two separate contracts, however this time they both bid for 2X instead of the 1X each. The community supported Skywest to SLC instead of UA to DEN and DOT went with their choice.

You can view the UA and OO proposals as well as the communities letters of support on the website.

Thanks, I misremembered. Anyway, good that the UA flight continues unsubsidized.

According to your numbers posted, WN is up about 70 flights.

Yes, but most all of those adds predate this schedule change. It seems to me the May changes are net down. Could be wrong...

Their currency related sales issues in Mexico hurt loads. I wasn't really shocked they messed up their Mexico govt approvals. All this type of stuff just falls outside WN's core competence.

I guess they just keep a toe in to keep WN in check.

Is the WN CLE-STL a seasonal adjustment? Glad to see some added STL-TUL flights too.

Well maybe you should be surprised. It was the Mexican government holding things up. Not only was it WN service but AA from MIA. The US government had to step in, once they did the approvals were issued very soon after the intervention.

Now I am not saying that WN is doing well or not. I am sure that currency is an issue for them. I think once their new reservations system is in place they will be able to accept foreign currency.

Can anyone provide any WN MEX numbers?

Imagine what WN's Cuba load factors will be. :o
They get points for sticking with things, but I think they are a little too eager to lose money in things that have an extremely long wick.

Airlines are reporting declining RASM outlook for 4Q and 1Q. I wonder how much is Cuba? It's not that big of a % of capacity, but when something performs 80 margin points below average it will be noticeable.

I think those flights have been going on since summer. They just weren't running yet in the months listed last year. Like STL-OAK started daily in June but are 0>1 because they weren't running yet last April. I don't exactly remember when CLE started but it's been daily for awhile.

Or seasonal adjustments. I thought the CLE route was new but it wasn't.
