Air Berlin to lease A330neo aircraft

Mon Dec 12, 2016 8:45 am

According to ATDB, Air Berlin will start receiving A330-900neo aircraft from Air Lease Corporation in 2018. The first aircraft will be MSN 1844.

Thoughts?

I wonder if this has to do with the prospects for a functional BER airport looking more promising. This also goes along with AB's upcoming service changes -- premium long haul carrier now, isn't it? It's hard to keep up anymore. If that's the case, then expanding their long haul fleet would make sense.

I guess they will be A330-900? Quite a step up in capacity for such a struggling airline.
Will they replace the A330-200s or will they be for expansion? Air Berlin is going through yet another restructuring/repositioning plan that will see it shrink in size and concentrate on the core markets of DUS and TXL with focus on trans Atlantic routes and major European destinations. Non hub routes will be transferred, together with some 40 planes and crews, to Eurowings. Most leisure routes will go to the newly established Joint Venture with Tuifly, Niki and Ethiad.
If BER will be open by the time the A330Neo start arriving, there will be chances to expand the long haul network ex Berlin. Right now TXL is rather limited in space and appeal for high(er) yield destinations

Interesting, good to see Air Berlin getting new planes. Too bad they did not get the 787 back then. But this makes sense as part of their new strategy concentrating on long haul flights together with EY. In order to compete with all the new 787s and A350s they would need new equipment especially if they want to offer EY´s standard. The A350 would be too big for them and with the A330Neo they would have a lot of commonality with the A319, A320 (the A321s will all go to Niki) fleet as well as their older A330s. Also the A330Neo is not really in high demand so I guess it would be a lot cheaper to lease than 787s and A350s.

First off, it is good to see who some of the airplanes ordered by leasing companies are going to.

Second off, I really question why Air Berlin is acquiring bigger airplanes. Here is a quote from a recent article

Air Berlin PLC (AIBEF.PK) reported that its revenue passenger kilometers for the month of November 2016 decreased by 5.1 percent to 2.972 billion kilometers in yearly comparison.
The number of available seat kilometers decreased by 4.4 percent to 3.66 million kilometers in comparison with the corresponding month of the previous year.

Air Berlin is not in a good financial position at all. Air Berlin has lost over a billion Euros in the last three years, even with oil prices as low as they are. They are surviving in a lifeline from Etihad who grossly overpaid for Niki a few weeks ago to inject cash into the dying company. More efficient airplanes will probably help, but I can't imagine the leasing company giving Air Berlin a particularly good deal.

That may be true, but how much longer can Etihad bankroll them? Air Berlin has lost more money in the last 3 years than total profit earned by Etihad by a factor of about 5.

The A330neo is coming of age! Wonder if Air Berlin will be around to take delivery of them. I'd say it's probably 50/50 at best.
First to fly the 787-9

The 330 NEO being a poor man's B787 will help the bottom line at Air Berlin. They are going to need it with the likes of Norwegian, Level and the new generation of Long Haul Low cost airlines.

At this point MSN 1844 and 1861 have been allocated to Air Berlin.

The news on your link are not the core part Air Berlin redressment plan and has no direct impact on their latest fleet or network plans.

Yes it could be viewed as a cash generating step to buy them more time, but looks like their restructuring is partially paying off.

Worse comes to worse, Lufthansa is waiting and will eventually take over Air Berlin's routes and airplanes and integrate them into Eurowings.

Well, that was the plan months ago. But it didn´t work out, they couldn´t find an agreement to merge the Niki with TUIFly and create this new "Bluesky" or whatever it is they wanted to call it.

Air Berlin finally confirmed the lease:

Germany-based airberlin has confirmed to ATW it will lease two Airbus A330-900neos, but has not disclosed the lessor.

An airberlin spokesperson told ATW, “The contract will be a so-called lease-in from a leasing company. The final delivery date depends on the delivery schedule from Airbus.”

Only 2 A330-900neos makes them two oddballs in their A330 fleet. Just thinking of one going tech, AB will have to deal with a surplus of passengers which can't be accommodated on an A330-200.
I guess they'll be increasing their A330neo order steadily or will place an order on their own in the future. But that won't happen until their financials will look substantially better.
