Airport with the most A320 movements is...

Sun Dec 18, 2016 12:52 pm

http://www.business-standard.com/articl ... 567_1.html

Delhi airport sees the highest number of Airbus A320 flights in the world, according to a report by aviation website anna.aero.

The website, which tracks airline network planning, analysed aircraft type wise departures for the first week of August. The report was released earlier in the week.

While Dubai airport has the highest number of Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 flights, Delhi tops the list for A320 movements.

I find it interesting that DEL is the airport with the largest A320 movements in the world, Airbus must be pleased!

The credit goes to.... "IndiGo"! For amassing 120 A320s in 10 years, with most of them based in Delhi. Also to GoAir and AI for adding 30 other A320..

With 400 IndiGo and 100 Go Air+AI A320Neo to come, Delhi is set to retain this status for a long long time..

Indians love statistics - especially those that show these "greatest/highest/biggest" kind of stuff.

Before reading the article I thought BCN was the be quite high (Vueling) and it is indeed the 3rd highest in the world.

However the margin is quite big of about 200..

Thanks for this, I'm generally suspicious of Indian journalists when it comes to aviation!

Suppose Barcelona could lose its spot, with local big player Vueling having been adding A321s for a while now. Most of them seem to be based in BCN, with only one or two going to FCO.

So from a small data set of only top 3 airports, we can see the trend...

1. LHR - Highest number of A380 and 747 movements. (Ignoring DXB as its home of EK).
2. 737 family - CGK has comes on top.
3. 757 - Older Boeing aircraft model concentrated in US only.
4. 767 - Soon-to-be-ended Boeing aircraft model concentrated in Japan.
5. Bombardier could capture US market only.
6. Embraer's smaller aircraft could capture mainly US market.
7. Airbus is everywhere other than North America. Mobile plant will help this change in few years.

I believe the U.S. leads in 767's. All of ANA's are gone leaving only JL and a few others. Delta still has a healthy mix of 763's and 764's. AA fleet is shrinking but still a healthy number. If you add 767F's, the count isn't even close.

You seem to be writing Boeing off. Airbus having a factory in the U.S. isn't going to tilt anything in Airbus favor. US carriers have a lot of 737s on order. Remember AC will soon be getting it's 737 and the 320 family left will be those allowed under the contract with Rouge, which limits the # of planes.

ANA still has many 767s, many of which are still less than 5 years old.

Yup, they have 10 A321s at the moment, I´ve been tracking them on FR24 and they fly mostly out of ORY, only 3 or 4 have BCN as their ¨base¨ one seems to like going BCN-LPA a lot hehe.

Tangentially speaking, it's a little queer Indian carriers haven't upgauged to the A321 often. AI has a batch of 20 or so from their order from the mid-2000s, and I understand 6E has converted a few from their NEO order to the A321, but other than that the A320 is king.

I agree - esp with infrastructure constraints (BOM is a classic example), a A321 should help meet increasing demand...

With infrastructure expansion, we can make some future guesses.

1. The new IST will probably have more A321 flights than DEL has A320 flights say about 5 years after open.
2. Small aircraft are so concentrated in US airports that any trends (such as current upgauge) will be felt globally.
3. 737 family has more top operations than A320 family.
4. DXB is 'outsize' for 777 ops, no one else is close.

It is exciting that DEL has more A320 operations than any other airport. However with more infrastructure growth elsewhere, I expect there to be a major shift.

It might be quite unofficial...but I was watching the KMIA Airport Cam -- seems like they might give the world a run at being the airport with the most A330 movements. Quite impressive!
ABE, BIL, BOS, BUF, BWI, CAE, CAK, CHS, CLE, CLT, CVG, DAY, DFW, DTW, EWR, FLL, GSO, IAD, IAH, IND, ISP, JAX, JFK, LAS, LGA, M57, MDW, MEM, MHT, MIA, MKE, MLB, MSO, MSP, OMA, ORD, PBI, PHL, PIT, PVD, RDU, SEA, SFO, SLC, SJU, STL, SYR, TLH, TMB, TUL, YVR

Interesting that for the A319, London scores a 1-2, with LGW leading LHR, but appears nowhere else on the list for narrowbodies. A reflection of the large fleets BA and U2 bought, though both will be moving to larger models so will lose this leading position...

Slightly surprised that FRA is ahead of LHR on 747s, but this reflects the LH 747-8 operations and the sheer number of operators who fly to LHR, who moved to the A380

Because India will be the second largest aviation market in 25-30 years and this stat means Airbus has been successful in curtailing Boeing from growing in India.

Delhi airport sees all kinds of aircraft- ATRs to A380 everyday.

This is a Non sequitur! Airport with most A320 movements means exactly that there is no airport with more A320 movements.
It does not even mean that there are more A320 movements than 737 movements, or than A330's, or E195s, or Ju52s.

I've seen predictions that India will be the 3rd largest aviation market by 2020 to 2026 depending on who does the estimate.

Where did you get 2nd largest? I'm not seeing the airport infrastructure to be #2 not to mention the fuel taxes will cap India at lower utilization that other countries.

Last I looked, India was the #9 market. I see a path to #3. I see how Indigo made DEL #1 for the A320 subvariant. I'm not seeing the consistency of policy for India to be #2 within 30 years. But if you have a link, educate me.

Why do you think Infrastructure is not enough to support development? Around 5 airports are already lying unsued in India. With time, policies are only going to improve to accelerate growth.
Also, it's difficult to believe that US with a population of only 0.35 bilion, will be able to stay ahead of India with a population of 1.52 billion (in 2030). This estimate suggests India will be the largest market by 2030:
