Question on Qantas 747 VH-OEJ trip to London STN 14-16 december 2016

Tue Dec 20, 2016 12:00 am

Hello everyone,

Haven't seen anything regarding this already, but if there already is a tread about this, please delete this.

I just looked at Qantas 747 fleet activity on Flightradar24 and noticed that VH-OEJ mad a trip to London Stansted between the 14 and 16 December via Bangkok.

Was this a charter flight, or do anyone here know what this trip was for?

Flight number was QF6051 westbound and QF6052 eastbound.

According to QF Source it was indeed a charter but there's no mention as to why..even with higher than normal loads for the holidays you'd think with 13 x A388 and I think 6-7 x 77W daily on the EK/QF joint venture across the UK the wouldn't need to add a extra flight especially a random one out of STN to boost capacity, so I suspect this must have been a private endeavour, it's possible I guess that it would have been to return the rugby team home after the autumn internationals but I some how doubt that
Must think up a new one soon, slow moving brain trying to get into gear ;)

Well, I could understand why they'd prefer to leave quietly from STN rather than LHR. :duck:

The guy must have more money than sense. Leave a nice warm country, fly half way round the world to a grey and cold land mass. Endure strikes and endless TV repeats over Xmas !!! Guess he could pick any seat on the plane. :santahat:

PS Got a ballpark figure for the cost ?

A private client doesn't necessarily mean an individual it could well be a company or from what others have said on other forums it was a religious group that chartered the QF 747-400 to fly into STN.

The charter is by Hughes Travel for the Bretheren religion...they always charter QF planes...on these flights all IFE is disabled...there is no serving of alcohol except for Whiskey.

Qantas 747 at Stansted

Thu Dec 29, 2016 7:48 pm

Hi all, does anybody know why Qantas are sending Boeing 747s to Stansted?

VH-OEF was there today and VH-OEJ showed up on 15th December.
Are they just to provide extra capacity to London?

VH-OEF is operating QF6053/6054 SYD-BKK-STN-BKK-SYD. Probably some additional capacity for this of year travel on the Kangaroo route.

Charters still going via Asia rather thanDubai - suppose most efficient for fuel split for flight

They are Hughes Travel Charters not additional capacity. Had it been additional capacity to the UK the flight number wouldn't be in the 6000 range.

I think SYD-DXB may be beyond the fully-loaded 747-400ER's range, given the prevailing wind.

Not uncommon for the Brethren to charter widebody aircraft, the New Zealand devision is probably Air New Zealands best customer. Often charter 772 even for short domestic hops.

SYD-DXB is well within the range of a 747-400ER. Not only that, these flights will be relatively lightly loaded I would imagine...
