American adds a 3rd flight Bogota - Miami

Tue Dec 27, 2016 4:54 am

All 3 daily flights to be served by Airbus A319. Gone are the days where 767 / 757 dominated the route

The new flight starts on April 2017

I know its a tad obvious because of retired planes etc but a route like BOG-MIA anyone know why they still don't bother to send a 767 or 757 a 3x daily A319 does not nearly seem like enough capacity to compete with the likes of Avianca and Latam to BOG from MIA.

With three A319s a day to MIA and one A319 to DFW, the combined belly space is still probably less than one A300 or one B767-300 that used to fly to MIA daily. What has happened to all the cargo business northbound out of Colombia with the switch to narrow-body Baby buses? Flowers are still a major export, and they come boxed and pre-packaged.

I see 6 widebody freighters scheduled to fly from Bogota to Miami today with one being a 747-8. It looks like the freight is all going on dedicated freighters. The belly of a 767 is nothing compared to dedicated freighters.

That's sad. I remember about 15-17 years ago the 3 dailies were flown on 752, 763, and AB6.

Well 15-years ago, we did not have JetBlue, Spirit and a refreshed and larger Avianca in the market.

The US-Colombia open-skies agreement has brought much expanded consumer choice in airlines, routes and pricing. No longer can AA live off a oligopolistic market.

So, no its not sad. Its quite positive development.

And 15 years ago AA controlled the market and there were barely any flights that didn't go to BOG. Today there are dozens of daily flights on six airlines between MIA and FLL to six airports in Colombia.

Still waiting on a BOG-BOS flight, wonder if AA would have the balls or is it only possible with B6?

Only possible if B6 does it.

AV recently presented a request to operate this route (A319). This was done last 7 December before the GEPA of the AEROCIVIL and the approval decision should be issued on the next few days.

So between them and LATAM, its 4 daily and a few weekly?
All narrowbody?
Do note that if this is a L-AA 319, the hard product is vastly superior in Y than the 763.

Smart move - this allows AA to maintain schedule presence while still managing capacity in a market that has become far more crowded than it used to be. Give financial, operational and competitive dynamics, the A319 actually seems like the ideal aircraft for AA in BOG - capacity will, indeed, be down significantly from the heady days of 15-20 years ago, but on the flip side, I suspect revenue load factors (i.e., not upgrades or nonrevs) will be far higher in the premium cabin.

Unless you are in a window seat.

L-AA A319 IFE boxes are under the window seats, which (1) makes it hard to put your feet under the seat in front of you, and (2) severely limits the size of carry on bags that can be placed under the seat in front of you. L-AA A319s also have very tight seat pitch, so when you combine an an inability to use the area under the seat in front of you for anything larger than a newspaper with the tight seat pitch, sitting in the window seat of an L-AA A319 is very unpleasant.

While some capacity may be temporary due to the peak travel season/holidays, AV has three flight BOG-MIA with departures at 0811, 1407 and 2137. They also fly BOG-FLL at 0845 and BOG-MCO at 0829. LATAM has a 1400 departure to MIA as well.
