How is Air Canada doing at LYS?

Tue Dec 27, 2016 11:27 am

Last June AC started a new five times weekly scheduled service between YUL and LYS. During winter, frequencies are down to four. How successful are they on that new route?

For the anecdote, I notice AC828/829 operated over Christmas whereas AC834/835 to GVA didn't. Same for New Year apparently.

I was booked on AC828 on November 18, and AC cancelled about 3 weeks out due to low bookings. But November is a slow month. The route is being flown 4x/week all winter, but will move to daily this summer. And the route will be upgauged from a 763 to a 333, which is a good sign.
Next flights: YQM-YUL-YVR-YUL-YQM / YQM-YYZ-HKG-DXB-BCN-YUL-YQM

Very light bookings in the premium cabins so I can't see it stay on Air Canada for too long. Rouge is currently capacity constrained but I have no doubt it'll go to them once they get more 767s.

Right, in July and August they'll be flying daily. Another market where TS will feel the pressure on their 4 or 5 weekly mix of A310s, A332s and A333s. I wonder whether it will remain mainline or switch to Rouge during the next few years.

I have seen the Business class cabin full on those flights in October. I would say that this route needs time. You don't instantly fill up the business cabin, business traveler often have contract with airlines for their flights and it takes time for them to switch.
On top of that, YUL isn't really a J heavy destination from France, you just have to look at aircrafts configuration from CDG to YUL compared to JFK.

Overall I think the route is performing as expected and even better, with upgauge to daily 333 compared to 5 weekly 763 in S17 and 6 weekly flights in autumn next year compared to 4 weekly now. They wouldn't do that if it wasn't working.

Indeed, that's why AC added some high density 77W to cover such route.

I hope LYS does well. It's one of my favorite cities, and while I understand demand for Canada/US-LYS is weak, it would be nice to see something stick. I'd love to see DL bring back JFK-LYS on the 757, but I won't hold my breath. I've been toying with some itineraries to go this summer from LAX, and the AC flight often pops up. I'm not so hot on AC's product, but it would be cool to fly direct into LYS for once.
