N29971 22th of the type, after several weeks on the CHS flightline, finally had its B1 yesterday.
Note: the UA fleet spreadsheet has a typo showing it as N26971 (wondered why I didn’t see it on FlightAware)

Sorry about that - spreadsheet updated. Glad to see it is close to delivery.

764:
UA is now showing one seat map for the 764 and it has 2 seats pulled (44AB). 42 and 43AB are the crews seats. Looks a bit weird as the map states 203Y on top (instead of 201Y) and below shows Y at 131-133. Most times UA would show two maps as 13 units are flying with seats 44AB.

UAX additions:
CR2:
N430AW (2002 build) has entered UAX service with Air Wisconsin
N470ZW (2004 build) has entered UAX service with Air Wisconsin
N411ZW (2001 build) has entered UAX service with Air Wisconsin
N471ZW (2000 build) has entered UAX service with Air Wisconsin

I guess that either N29971 or N24972 might be the one that flies the inaugural IAH-SYD, New route launched by a brand new plane.

Unlikely as induction takes seven to ten days and then the first few revenue flights are usually domestic only. It would be great if that were possible though.

Seems like it is possible. I was on the 7th 788's 3rd revenue flight ever, NRT-LAX, and while it technically did a domestic flight first, it was just the positioning flight from IAH-DEN, before doing DEN-NRT.

Ah, that new airplane smell ( and Buggy IFE)

It is not possible because both ship 971 and ship 972 are pmUA metal for flight-attendants. IAH-SYD will be flown by pmCO flight-attendants.

Neither of your profiles nor signature lines say you're United employees... I can guess, but I don't really know who either of you are speaking on behalf of when you say "our." Is "our" United? An airplane services company? A purchaser? A bank with a lien? Unless you explain what group you belong to, a relative term like "our" isn't helpful in a public forum like Airliners.net.

Why should I announce that? "Our" was pretty forthcoming no? But if you must know. I just celebrated my 29th year here at UA on 11/30.

The Airbus fleet was planned for February completion and the rest of the Panasonic equipped fleet in May. I did have an Airbus flight this week that had the best, most consistent service I’ve had in a long time.

"If you’ve ever used wi-fi internet onboard a United flight, you know that it often is frustratingly slow. Thankfully, United has noticed as well and promised swift improvements in the months to come.
In a letter to employees, Chief Operating Officer Greg Hart outlined a three-step plan to improve in-flight wifi.

We are working with Panasonic to improve the quality of the Wireless Access Points (WAPs) on all of our Panasonic aircraft. These devices connect the user with the Wi-Fi and PDE [Personal Device Entertainment] on the aircraft.
More and better WAPs mean more customers can tap into a strong, steady connection at the same time.
Earlier this month, we completed WAP upgrades on our domestic Boeing 777s, boosting available capacity by 130 percent per flight, and we expect to finish these modifications to our Airbus fleets by February 2018 and all other Panasonic aircraft by May.
Our initial experience on the 777 aircraft has been very promising with a 38 percent increase in Wi-Fi purchases on an average flight and 13 point increase in Wi-Fi customer satisfaction.
We are also installing new broadband controllers on all the aircraft.
These units connect the aircraft to the satellite network and will largely solve the outage issues we experience on our Panasonic fleets.
In addition, the controllers will also increase throughput by over 20 times and allow for much quicker connection speeds.
Panasonic is also adding satellites to its network, so our customers will benefit from better coverage, speed and bandwidth."

I have not read one comment about United's Ch 9, or "From the Flight Deck" in a long time. On my recent 77W flight it was not on. I don't know if it worked or if the pilot turned it off. So, with a lot of new aircraft coming, both brand new and used...any discussion if United's unique feature be made available?

I have not caught a 77W flight yet but supposedly it does have channel 9 installed. All 767 and 777 and the PW powered 752 aircraft have channel 9....

All 14 77W aircraft do indeed have a Channel 9 switch installed in the cockpit. I believe though that it is turned on probably less than 10% of the time. A few guys don’t mind it being on, but most of the guys would just prefer that it be left off. One less way to make the national news these days.... :scratchchin:

Most people don't know what they're listening to anyway. I listen to it all day, and it just isn't that interesting most of the time! We're only about four years away from enroute Data Comm (or that's when it's scheduled anyway...), which will replace a lot of voice communications between pilots and ATC, so it'll get even less interesting when that happens.

Perhaps one day it will be obsolete, and I am sure that a longer generation of fliers know even less about it. That said, I do know a few people who are not aviation enthusiasts who listen. They are all folks with a fear of flying. It comforts them (especially during turbulence) to hear the pilots calm voices. I once told that to a UA pilot (on a 767 to Brazil) and he said that he never puts it on, when I told him of my friends who derive great comfort from it...it was something he had never thought of before...and said he would consider doing it more. He may have just been humoring me, but he seemed genuinely enlightened by my story.
I am from the days when legacy United was actually well known for what was called "Ch 9" and known for being the only airline with it. It used to be called out rather prominently in Hemispheres magazine and it was almost always on.

I've only had it on a few of my flights. And it seemed like the rediculously long F/A announcements after takeoff would block over all of the interesting parts on climbout. By the time the announcement was over we would be on Center/en route frequency where chatter was fairly limited and routine.

I actually meant since that announcement. I was hoping someone on here might know the status of the different fleets. Specifically interested in the 77W's since I'm flying one this week.

I have a question. Yesterday I flew from EWR to Ft Lauderdale for Christmas. The flight was near perfect. The crew was awesome and had red and white holiday scarves on and were very happy and provided great, friendly service. We departed on time, landed early.
I was on a 737-900 that had been renovated inside: brand spanking new overhead bins and service panels, new carpet, new Y seats, Boeing Sky roof and if I’m not mistaken, new Lavs and new side walls with new window wells and shades. Also everything was very clean.
I was in First Class, and with everything else having been updated, this 737 had the OLD navy blue leather CO style First Class seats, not the new F seat that are on the Airbuses. Why?
Why take the time to renovate an entire 737 nose to tail but not update the EXPENSIVE premium seats in First Class?
I paid for that seat. No upgrade.
Had this 737-900 gotten the new First seat and bulkhead design she’d have been a beauty inside.
I used WiFi to do some work and emails- it worked perfectly. I just don’t understand the old F seats.
Are people giving the new F seat bad reviews?
Personally, I like them a lot. Great storage, intelligent placement for power and the better recline and better lower back support. It also looks nicer and up to date.
Strange to me!

Thanks!
On the topic of the 737s getting the new First Class seat, I decided to write United directly and ask. They wrote me back in just about 2 hours!
The person who wrote me said there is no talk of a new First Class seat in the 737 fleet.
The rep who wrote went onto say that they are receiving new Deamliners AND 787’s!!! Ha! Also, not at all relevant to my single 737 question. She did say she’d write me back with any news if she gets some.
I presume they may know less than us!!!

If you were on a -900 that looked 'new,' it was likely a sUA 739 with an N number ending in 8XX. These have lighter interiors and the new seats. Your flight likely didn't have any television screens as well?? I love these birds because I dislike the dark blue interiors on the older 737s. All 900s have the old F seat. Right now, only the -700s, 753s, and Airbus fleet will have the new F. Expect that the whole fleet will eventually get them if/when Wall Street relaxes their push to cut costs.

That is what is infuriating to me for consistency and customer service, the lack of it.

Even with a 737....there is an inconsistency on our aircraft especially in F Class, and Coach...

A 737 regardless of -700, -800, -900, should be consistent. I get being different from the Airbus...but even so...

Delta and American are both consistent in what they offer seat wise. Granted some have TV some do not. When someone like VC can notice different F Class SEAT...something's gotta change.

For our 737-700 to have new F Seats, but not the 737-800 and 737-900 is an inconsistency in our onboard product, and to hear UA say at this time no plans to renovate, we will continue to fall behind. Is it doom and gloom, of course not. However it's those little things, that are as equally noticeable to our customers.

I sure wish a 737 regardless of type had one consistent product, our Airbus A319/20 are consistent for once...and so forth.

It wasn’t renovated. It was new. As for the old seats that’s probably a supplier contract. When they ordered that aircraft, probably seven years ago, that’s what was ordered. If they wanted new seats they have two options. Pay for the old seats and the new seats, or go bankrupt and void the contract.

Well, I don’t want to sound impractical because I am a businessman myself and I get wasting money.

But, it was a gorgeous airplane EXCEPT for the very dated First Class seats that cost HUNDREDS of dollars more to buy. I want United to have a better reputation and it’s getting better. It had an AWESOME crew and the flight was on time.

I wrote them and got a written response in 2 hours. That’s impressive. However it was sad to read that the United rep who wrote it said to appease me that while the 737-900 wasn’t getting the new First Class seat they are getting “Dreamliners and 787’s” - she didn’t even say they were getting 100 737MAX-10’s!

Legacy United ordered these? I thought they had gotten rid of 737s forever- or were they ordered by the UA division during or after the merger?

I loved the old Legacy UA F seat that was on their Airbuses, the ones they removed. They were based on the old international J recliner. They were perfectly ergonomic and so comfortable.

Anyway, in closing, EWR is looking great (IMHO) some of the plywood is down and the new Global Services reception is gorgeous and the new gate area furniture is really not nice. When the new Polaris lounge opens - I would like to believe that EWR will lose its stigma as will United and they will earn a solid 4 gold stars! And I think the new F seat on ALL 737’s and the consistency would help a bit.

They were ordered as 757 replacements after the merger, if I recall correctly. I know deliveries started around 2013/2014, before pilot seniority integration.

Is there any talk of rolling the pmCO 738 and 772 fleets through the paint shop? Starting to see some really bad looking paint jobs at EWR. N27239 is one registration that comes to mind off the top of my head. There are a few others. I'll look through my pictures.

One of those seats cost about 15k. So 15,000x20=300,000 per aircraft x 100 new orders = 30,000,000 dollars. Add to that the new seats which are more expensive, and moding the previous deliveries you’re pushing 75 million.

Airlines are expensive.

Many of the B737's were delivered prior to the merger and a lot of the B737-922's were delivered after the merger.. You would need to check the Registration numbers with the FAA website to know which are which. The Non- SCO B737's do not have direct TV as they were not under contract to carry Direct TV.
That was a management decision that may or may NOT be popular . But nobody below senior management had any say about it!

DL's seats are not consistent across their 737 fleet. I don't think AA's are either - at least in Y - but I'm not 100% sure on that. UA is far from alone in having inconsistencies.

F seat style has to be one of the last things that will win a customer's business. It's simply not important. And generally, newer F seats aren't as comfortable as previous generations. They don't have the padding or privacy they used to. It would be a waste of money to install new seats if older seats are already purchased. What's wise is to replace them when the time comes.

Wow! $15k for those older seats! That is NEWS to me. I would have never thought that of the old seats (I wonder why they cost so much?). With that in mind I shall stop complaining as it would be absurd to spend $75 million. I’m flabbergasted.

That said- I would argue that some of the old seats are better than others. I’ve noticed 2 distinct kinds (perhaps a 3rd) and one of them is dreadfully uncomfortable and I’m pissed when my 737 has it - you’d think that at that price they would at least be dreamy seats you’d want at home to watch TV, and headrests that actually hold your head? Where does that $15,000 go in making that seat? The inner workings?

Someone above said it just doesn’t matter to the flier, well then I may be alone. So if someone always pays for F what is their primary motivation? Can’t be the food! Could it be as simple as “it beats an Economy seat because F is less packed?” For me, when I pay for domestic F, I’m paying for comfort, that is the single motivation (just like paying for international J, especially if it’s a 6am flight and I need more zzz’s before I get to my destination. Plus room to work on my computer. I will even take a flight earlier than I wanted just to get a United Airbus if one is available. I know it’s a harder cushion but I like that seat a lot, the forward moving butt cushion when reclining goes a long way to feeling the recline! The smart design of the stow space and power makes a huge difference. (And IMHO I think they are beautifully designed, and as a designer myself I have a real appreciation for its aesthetic)

Just curious: who are some of the manufacturers of these seats? Recaro, Zodiac, etc? Do the folks who design and manufacture the newest lie-flat seats also produce these domestic F seats for DL, AA and UA...etc?
I know there are many manufacturers, just curious if they do both. I’d be curious to visit their websites.

As for consistency, I think UA is fairly consistent and when it’s not it’s because the ac is new and fitted with the latest. UA has come a long way since the dark days of the merger.

I’m still learning this stuff so THANK YOU so much for your thoughts and facts!
