Which countries import (and export) transfer passengers?

Thu Jan 05, 2017 5:10 pm

Clearly, some countries attract more transfer passengers from abroad then they "loose" to hubs in their neighbouring countries. Amsterdam/the Netherlands for example must get more foreign transfer passengers then Dutch travelers that it "looses" to nearby hubs for their international transfer flights. Are there any statistics that show this flow of transfer passengers? Who is a net importer/exporter of stop-over travellers? Thank you!

'Who is a net importer/exporter of stop-over travellers'

That's a strange term used for describing passengers in transit!
94 Countries, 327 Destinations Worldwide, 32 Airlines, 29 Aircraft Types, 182 Airports, 335 Flights.

Minor nit-pick... it's "loses", not "looses".

I lose bets, but my trousers are loose.

I doo not like the term Import/Exportin relation to People. Individuals make their own choice whether they want to travel direct or through a third country hub. ADV does not publish a statistic that Shows how many of the passengers in- and outbound are connecting . They only Show the direct Transfer, that is Pax staying on board of a flight making a stop-over.

With 220 Million Pax last year and a Population of 82 Million and an open and free market it is safe to say that more German residents travel through other Country hubs than foreigners travel through German hubs, which are FRA, MUC and to a lesser extend DUS.. Domestic feed dos not qualify to the question

AMS and CDG publish their total number of transfer pax, but no-one knows how many pax they lose to other hubs:
FRA and LHR do not publish the number of transfer pax.

2016 Transfer Passengers vs Total Passengers:

- AMS = 24 Million of 63 Million Total Pax.
- CDG = 11.5 Million of 65 Million Total Pax.

The London Heathrow web site reports that 32 per cent (24 million) of all passengers using the airport in 2015 were transfer passengers. As it does not qualify this figure I believe it will include passengers originating at other UK airports and those arriving and then transferring to a domestic flight..

On a broader theme the Heathrow Facts and Figures web page web page also gives the following passenger data for 2015:

Total passengers: 75 M
Most passengers in one day:237,312 (17 August 15)
International passengers:69.8 M (93%)
Domestic passengers: 5.1 M (7%)
Business passengers: 27 M (36%)
Leisure passengers: 48 M (64%)

Terminal 2 passengers: 16.7 M on 116,861 flights
Terminal 3 passengers: 15.2 M on 76,974 flights
Terminal 4 passengers: 9.2 M on 53,357 flights
Terminal 5 passengers: 33.1 M on 215,716 flights

It also provides2015 data on terminal sizes and stand numbers as well as such data as number of airlines (80), number of destinations (185 in 84 countries) and number of air transport movements (472,067)

How many passengers originating in all other UK airports connected in DXB, DOH, IST, AMS, CDG, FRA and others and avoided LHR?

Is there any worldwide passenger flow chart/analysis available?

More people from Germany transfer over another hub than those from outside transferring over FRA and MUC? I'd find that extremely unlikely.

Mind you lots of Germans may fly KLM or EK, but lots of Italians and Eastern Europeans do fly LH. So the deficit may not be huge as people may think. In Italy alone LH serves most destinations than in Germany itself and brand loyalty is very strong.

I would add HK to the list. I would say there are more passengers from mainland china, Taiwan and the Philippines than HK locals.

How do you even count? like how do you count passengers who travel to other hubs in neighboring country by land or by sea? and how do you know will those passengers transfer to other airlines especially for those who are flying LCC unless you're giving passengers survey like hawaii do? And when the passenger is flying out of a country for another connection but that passenger itself is from yet another country, how does that count? And how about travellers taking a.short break in Iceland when flying across Atlantic?
