It makes sense to let planes take off, up to a point. If authorities believed the situation to be contained at the time, there is no reason to block aircraft that can take off from doing so. If nothing else, that lowers the number of stranded passengers the airport and airlines would have to deal with. Also, with gates and terminals closed, there are inbound planes full of passengers stuck on the apron and some of them were talking to the tower and company dispatch about taking off for nearby airports to unload passengers.

With the ongoing developments at terminal 1 (either active shooter or active search depending on sources), closing the airport was inevitable.

They'll do a FOD check; I wouldn't think that is a priority if active shooter.

The entire airport is to be evacuated and searched. Telling people to shelter in place may be to allow for an orderly evacuation rather than have people running all over the place.

I'm just a travel enthusiast traveling as much as I can. I have San Juan and Havana next week, month, respectfully with others scheduled in the months to come. I use this airport very often as I use WN very often. It's sad for me because all I see is people like me doing what I do... visiting family, visiting the world, etc.

Esteban Santiago is the name of the shooter. I hate to come to conclusions but that name doesn't sound Islamic too me, it sounds Hispanic.

FLL is not letting any airplane land or takeoff at the airport. Also the FAA has put in a ground stop for all flights destined for FLL and has diverted other flights to MIA and PBI.

The Westjet flight would be the only one that would have landed at T2.

He was military, so I think he would have been OK getting his gun checked through. Reports say he loaded it in the bathroom.

curious as to the motive - they caught him alive, so they should have more info eventually...

Doesn't El Al have armed security at their stations in the US ?

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already and can see it happening in the near future, though IMHO, having a holstered weapon is not a deterrent, back in 2000 I took my then girlfriend to London, on exiting immigration/customs at the LGW south terminal we walked past armed police who were carrying what looked like HK rifles, she was shocked by this, but as I pointed out to her later, if something was to happen, would she rather have someone with a 9mm pistol in a holster or someone with a fully automatic rifle in their hands who only needs to flip the safety off to defend her.

It's something the US public may need to get used to.

If this is a T2 incident then it should exclude TS/WS from this list of possibilities. I believe only AC (of those listed) uses that terminal.

Correct - just listing the most recent Canadian flights into FLL. But per T2, only AC flights.

That is if he declared them to either the airline or customs. If he just stuffed it in his bag and kept mum, only Canadian security could have had a chance to see it on their scanners.

Don't they do a secondary check for checked luggage too? I'm asking because I could be wrong, but from what I've heard, they do, but maybe this isn't standard policy in the US?

You know, where there's a will, there's a way. This person obviously exploited a part of the checked firearm policy for air travel that some will argue that was either weak or non-existant. Either way, in true government form, I see TSA not allowing ANY checked firearms here on out as a knee jerk response.

I just don't get it why people have gone kill happy in recent years. It's just dumb. My heart goes out to those involved. Just sickening.

Long list of airplanes stuck on taxiways. Currently ops is coming out to them to do lav service.

Also, Air Canada claims the passenger by that name was not on their flights and that as far as they know, there were no checked guns on their flights. So, looks like ANC-MSP-FLL is the currently reported routing.

Depending on where you are traveling for hunting etc...Your preferred choice of ammo might not always be available. Airport in the Dakota's and Montana deal with this all the time. When I lived in BIS, the sheriff had a table set-up in the lobby where they did firearm/ammo inspections prior to people checking bags, the amount of firearms and ammo checked there would make heads spin.
