Pictures of new ETM (Ramon Airport, Israel) Construction - Opening Aug 2017

Fri Jan 06, 2017 8:09 pm

New pictures of ETM are out. Opening is scheduled for August 2017.
The airport is set to replace VDA and ETH.
VDA currently serves European destinations while ETH serves mostly domestic Israeli tourist market.

Rendering of the airport. The train station will be constructed in the future.

Any idea why in 2017 there are no jetways? True there will almost never be rain or cold there but it sure does heat up. Even a short walk from bus to steps could get sweaty

Nice. Will Ryanair still be heavily subsidised like in Ovda? I read somewhere the amount of subsidy that Eilat paid per passenger was like in the dozens of euros (something completely crazy) per passenger.

My only guess is that in order to make this an all-jetway terminal, it would have had to be much larger (~30 parking stands planned).
A smaller terminal means at least some parking stands + buses, so they went for all buses to simplify ops and cut costs.
I agree this is somewhat of a disappointment.

I would assume it is to cut costs maybe? Maintenance and construction costs. Not to mention operating costs. But i feel like even taking a short bus ride would be still have its maintenance and operating costs.

Sweaty no because of the low humidity percentage in this area all year long but I can't understand it. In the summer temperature doesn't get below 40° C during the day and even if it is much cheaper to build a terminal without jetways, you simply don't do it these days. I expect lots of criticism about it when it will open.

Looks nice. I'm happy that we'll now have another suitable alternate when flying to TLV. Ovda is kinda limited when we arrive at night with my airline. I'm supposing that this will be all civilian right?

Will mis Eilat though and seeing the 753 coming in to land there!

This airport will not be an alternate to TLV. It is too far away. There is a plan for another international airport in northern Israel that will be but it progresses very very slowly.

I can't see this opening in 2017. Too much work to complete.

How frequent are the trains?

Zero.
The works on it hadn't began yet and nobody knows if it ever going to happen.

I should have been more clear. I meant diversion alternate for TLV. At this time we always plan Cyprus or Amman. A diversion in Israel would be somewhat easier logistically.

You must be mistaken.
ETM is 20km from the nearest body of water, and none of the land around is reclaimed.

How will the new airport affect the tourism industry in Eilat? A year ago Haaretz wrote:

"Where Are the Thousands of Tourists Coming to Eilat on Subsidized Flights?
Cheap flights have lured Russians and Europeans to the southern city, but the beaches are empty and hotels remain below capacity"

Allegedly only a fraction of tourists stay in Eilat, many head elsewhere in Israel, to Egypt, and even Jordan. Thoughts?

Thanks for posting this.

What is going to happen to the land on which currently sits ETH? It is excellent real estate.

Ryanair are currently, or as of a couple of weeks ago, offering fares to Katowice for 39 euro, which I think is slightly less than the subsidy they get from the municipality.

I think it's inherently difficult for Eilat to become a major tourism destination when Israel is generally quite an expensive place to go on a beach holiday. Especially when there is the option of Sharm El Sheikh and get the same scenery and probably better service for a fraction of the price.

As for the train, I'll believe it when I see it (probably from my retirement home on Mars).

All I heard were plans for a new hotel. I am assuming more real estate development to go with it. But it'll take quite some time.

It is hard to know and it definitely going to be depended on the season.
This airport is not going to be a new "hub" for LY and it won't surprise me if LY doesn't have international flights from it at all. It is just a new small airport (even if it has a runway that can take the A380) for the most remote city in Israel. Nothing more, nothing less.

While the runway is indeed suitable for the A380, the taxiways and aprons are not.

Provided Eilat is promptly closed probably 15-20 domestic flights by the usual suspects to Tel Aviv with just a few weekly charters from Europe/Ukraine/Russia.

EL-AL have operated a few schedules in the past into Ovda from European cities in the northern summer - Paris is one

Ryanair may extend its current limited range of scheduled flights from Ovda to new points in Western Europe .

Combined traffic from Eilat and Ovda and some growth could see 1.5 million passengers and perhaps 20,000 annual movements pa.

Thats roughly 25/26 arrivals and a similar number of departures per day - the overwhelming majority on the Tel Aviv shuttles.

I think this airport is mostly going to serve domestic operations to TLV and Haifa, and IIRC thats a huge market. The international market from Eilat dosent seem so big, I guess Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada takes most of the beach tourists in the area.

First of all thank you for the pictures.

I was wondering about the fate of the 4X-AES in ETH once the airport will be closed...
