How's AKL-IAH (ANZ28/29) doing?

Sun Jan 08, 2017 2:16 am

Hi A. Netters:

Just wondering how AKL-IAH-AKL (ANZ28/29) doing. It appears to be a unique route to me and would love to take it some day from IAH. I hope it is doing robust business. Any thoughts??

Early reports were showing good loads, but those were made several months ago. Rumor was that they were planning to go daily by now, however I have not heard as to whether this has happened or not, my curiosity is now piqued.

It currently is operating daily with the 772 for DEC16/JAN17 which is peak for North American flights from New Zealand (Australia and New Zealand Summer School Break, around 6 weeks).

Be interesting to see what their next move is - could they sustain year round 772 once the three premumium 789 are received and free the 772 fleet up a bit. How highly utilised is their 777s, and fleet overall? Or will they simply add ORD, and then start to fill out the non daily services - EZE, IAH, YVR.

I took the flight a few months back, was pretty quiet in Business with around 11 or so, but Premium and Economy were rammed.

It's much better for convenience transit to USA with it being a United hub, and it's a hell of a lot better than trying to transit thru LAX or SFO. It's also much better too for UK-NZ personally than direct NZ1/2.

From IAH passenger statistics. For 2016 through October , there were 56248 in bound and 51011 outbound passengers for an inbound load factor of 84.6% and outbound 77%. Average inbound cargo 5.56t and outbound 4.34t per flight.

Those stats seem to be reflective of the load that was on the flight my wife and I took coming back to Houston. Flight out back was pretty full. We were in a Skycouch setup, how does that factor into the load calculations?

I assume it reduces the load factor slightly, three seats two passengers . But probably the yield is improved by the Skycouch up charge.

IAH is the best connecting option in the US from NZ, this flight really reminds me of SYD-DFW :D

The fares they are asking for in Y as very competitive, especially for connections to Australia. Often several hundred less than a flight from IAH to Europe. Had me wondering if they were getting enough business. I think this flight is still not operating on Saturdays, at least from trying to make some dummy bookings.

I recently booked this flight for another visit to New Zealand. A nonstop will be much nicer than the IAH-LAX-SYD-AKL routing I did the first time.

Kia ora!

Obviously it depends where in the US you are coming from. IAH is a good option for those in the eastern or central time zones. A 6 hour transcon followed by an overnight red eye from LAX is not as pleasant as IAH.

Would ORD compliment or compete with IAH for connections? From AU ORD receives a lot of business?

Would the below work in the mid term, or too much capacity into NAM for NZ:
Daily YVR 789
2 x daily LAX 77W
Daily SFO 772/77W
Daily IAH 772/789
3/4 weekly ORD 789
Daily EZE 789

Cover all areas of NAM and then allows growth? Competes well against AA/QF ex-AU.

IAH is doing well load wise no idea on yeilds though. I'm picking they will add another destination when they feel the market has soaked up the current capacity.

I do wonder with UA going seasonal SFO-AKL if NZ will make IAH daily yearround and take some connecting traffic that would otherwise go via SFO? Plenty of slack to do that in NS where utilisation is a lot less than NW, heavy maintanence is done in NS when there is more slack in the fleet.

If I'm correct, IAH is daily 772. Many people that work for Air New Zealand have said the flight is packed everyday.

My pick is that IAH will be upsized to a 77W at the expense of NZ6 before long. I know the local cargo forwarders want more hold space for uplift on IAH

I just posted in the NZ thread about the possibility of an NZ 77W top-up order or 779 order with 77W cascading down to IAH etc. I think either one would work..
