Wed Jan 18, 2017 9:26 pm

Korean Air will soon receive its first 787-9 aircraft and released the corresponding seat map:

- F class cabin 20.8" seats, 2-2-2, 75-86" pitch, 6 seats
- C class cabin 20.8" seats, 2-2-2, 75-86" pitch, 18 seats
- Y class cabin 17.2" seats, 3-3-3, 33-34" pitch, 245 seats

For a total of 269 seats.

With the exact same F and C seats why bother paying for the F class?

As a Y flyer, I would gladly trade 17.2" wide seats for 34" pitch on long haul, heck yes! Although I fly to Asia from LAX and we get the low density A380 which is another treat in itself.
Flown 2018: LAX, ARN, DXB, ALA, TAS, UCG, ASB, MYP, GYD, TBS, KUT, BER, TLS, SVO, CCF, DUB, LGW, MEX, BUR, PDX, ORD, SLC, SNA
Upcoming 2018: STL, MIA, BZE, IAH, BHM, LHR, DFW, PHX

Basically the same as their A333s, just slightly more legroom in Y.

I was always curious about this configuration when it was first announced, given the low number of premium seats when compared to other 787 configurations. I feel that they could have done the same number of economy seats at 8 abreast with slightly less pitch.

Yes, good point. There does not seem to be a lot of differentiation between F and J. Wonder whether KE should have gone for two rows of really nice 1-2-1 suites in F or just drop F altogether and instead offer only J and Y (or J, a new-for-them W, and Y).
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

This is a very odd configuration. Looks like something an airline would use on leisure heavy routes. Is that where they are planning to use these?

The blue of the seats in F/C is rather bland. I understand it's the airline color of choice, but I like the deep blue of Y class much better. And I still don't see the point in having just 1 row of F class, and it doesn't look like it is even blocked off by anything to make it it's own stand alone cabin. Isn't that the point of F class? Being in an separate cabin without the peasants in the other classes bugging you?

There are some very very important people who really needs to board first class. In fact, 789 is very similar to KE's newer A330-300 configuration, F6C18Y248, with identical F and C configurations (staggered, full-flat), and without differentiation between F and C.

Yes, 789 seems targeted for tourism and VFR routes. YYZ, ZRH, MAD are planned along with a few short-haul routes.

Very, very important but also too careless about money it seems.

I would not say that ZRH is a leisure (tourism) route. There is probably a lot of business traffic generated by financial services firms and pharmaceutical companies, no?
YYZ also seems to me like a destination that would offer an interesting combination of leisure and business traffic. After all, isn't Toronto the fourth or fifth largest business/financial center in the Americas?

I am surprised that KE isn't considering premium economy on this model. As for a future destination, I wonder if ICN-BOS might be planned---it's too thin for even a 77W, but a 789 could work.

Better catering? Better lounges? Do the Business Seats have 23" IFE or are their screens smaller?

Agreed. I think they'll regret having an F cabin as opposed to a proper PEY

OZ went the other way and now only the A380s still have first class...makes sense to have a W compartment more and then cut the Y seat pitch to 32 inches.

Odd around F. I don't think I'd be too impressed. But we are at a point where J is the new F.

Be nice if KE introduced MEL-ICN 3 weekly with this, seems like a good config for the route too.

I like how the F seat diagrams in the KE seat map are a bigger size than the C seat diagrams. Even though F and C seats are exactly identical, but seat map needs to make F seats look BIGGER.

YYZ is pretty big, however, there is a lot of competition. For a city that isn't New York or LA, sustaining high J 77W's is tricky, especially given that YYZ also has flights to NRT, HND, PVG, PEK, CAN, HKG, MNL and TPE in the region. AC also just introduced a 3x weekly service between YYZ and ICN, and they are better geared to connect on both ends given their star partner Asiana at ICN. For KE, moving to a lower operating cost model is a way to remain competitive fare-wise yet manage yields.

To me, KE seems very wasteful of space on their aircraft. JL has a similar staggered seat on their newer aircraft. On the JL 77W, seats are configured 2-3-2. KE has it on their 77W in 2-2-2. Even their 748 is 2-2-2 with the same seat! It is a style of seat that offers direct aisle access in any case so why not increase capacity in J by 16+% per row?

Here again, looking at their 789, it looks too 'low density'. AC manages 30J, 21PY and 247Y. By comparison, KE is 6F, 18J and 245Y. We can just call it 24J and 245Y because the F seat is exactly the same as the J seat.

Are Korean pax really willing to pay a significant enough premium to fly with their home carrier that it would make sense for KE to waste space on their aircraft?

Well, Y class, yes.

F... not so much. :duck: :duck: :duck:

If I paid an F fare and then went for a walk around the cabin only to find the exact same seats in J, I'd probably feel similar to Mrs. Cho when she was given a bag of nuts instead of having them served on a plate.

That seat map is very misleading.

I really like the 33-34 inches of seat pitch in Y. With respect to F on this aircraft in this specific configuration, I don't really see the point! I would be very surprised if many people actually pay for it.

Fixed that for you.

First Class is nice, but anyone who says he NEEDS to fly First is beyond repair. In my eyes, this First Class product Korean has put in the 789 is a total joke. If I had paid for First Class and got that, I'd be upset.

I'm still confused about the difference between First and Business. Seats are identical, can someone explain. Is this a company-wide thing on other aircraft too?

Correct. But KE has been doing the same on A330s for a while and if it copies to B789, there surely is enough self-important celebrities :)

AC is known for squeezing seats. Since both AC and KE runs/will run the same fleet on the same route (B789 on YYZ-ICN), AC has a potential to earn 10% more revenue or to cut the fare by 10% and be more competitive. It's not that KE runs at a lower cost. No wonder KE has been in red for the last 4 (or more?) years.

While KE matches Y fare to competitors, F/C fare is frequently more expensive and rarely on sale.. (correct me if I'm wrong). Maybe premium class passengers (not out of their pockets) are willing to pay extra and take KE. B789 isn't alone: on the same space on 748, KE has F6C48, LH has F8C68 (40% more). The story goes on and on.

Does KE not have a lot of corporate contracts with the large Korean firms that gets them paid butts in those F seats? The Korean side of the O/D is very traditional in the F/J/Y aspects. If I had to hazard a guess, KE will be a late participant in the PY+ experience. Maybe some soft product enhancements for a Y+ (especially if KE/DL form some better relationships transpacific).

Anecdotally, I have some friends/ coworkers who do SFO/SEA - ICN often and KE is generally always spoken highly of.

This might be the first 789 where people are willing to admit the plane is comfortable in Y.

I've always wondered why KE have F on all long haul aircraft when there are several routes where it's not offered. Surely 2 class for most routes outside the trunk to LHR, FRA, CDG, LAX,JFK Which can remain 3 class on A380's and a few 77W's.

That was my hope too but BOS tends to be a premium heavy route so this configuration is totally wrong for BOS, IMO. Just about every long haul airline operating from BOS offers more premium seats than this configuration and airlines like CX, JL, EK, BA, LH, VS, all bring their premium heavy configs. With that in mind, I think the A332 is still KE's best suited aircraft for a potential ICN-BOS.

Exactly! The only way I can see anyone paying extra is if they were duped into buying those seats thinking they'd be as excellent as KE's other suites.
