Emirates one off A380 to BOS January 26, 2017

Sat Jan 21, 2017 3:33 am

Saw this on EK's FB page. Doesn't specify any reason why, but definitely seems similar to ORD not too long ago, likely to test the waters for an upcoming announcement upgrading ORD and BOS to the A380. Indeed it is loaded, looks like BOS spotters will have something a little different than usual come Thursday!

It's a test of the new gate system/terminal area that is nearing completion in Boston. I believe BA is bringing theirs for similar reasons a few days later.

Rumours flying around that Emirates will not be a regular a380 operator in Boston though

Is it an all new gate or modification to an existing gate? And when is BA coming?

Looks like BA Super is loaded starting on Sunday March 26, 2017. It's finally coming!

A bit of each actually. They tore down a few gates from terminal E, and rebuilt that section of the terminal. Completely new structure added on to the old. Three A380 capable gates were added.

Can't confirm it, but I believe BA is bringing the 380 on the 29th.

It's confirmed, it's in the system. It will arrive as BA239 on the 29th and will depart the next morning as BA238. I suspect they chose that flight since it has the longest downtime for the aircraft. They'll have all night to play around with the jetbridges and such.

BOS, please don't pull an ORD and damage the plane on the first visit. :duck:

I like the way EK put A380 on various 'one-offs', there was one at GLA a few year backs which *apparently* may eventually now be signalling an upgauge from 773

I posted my theory about Boston and the EK A380 elsewhere. Not sure if it is plausible, but here goes: the number of passengers flying daily on the route is between 600-700 I think. LF are in the 70-90 percent range, depending on the season. And that is with 2x 777-300ER a day. They can't swap those two flights for one A380 (obviously). And changing the mix to one 77W and one A380 would tank LF; there just isn't enough business on the route. What EK is missing is a SMALLER plane than the 77W, which, paired with the A380, would make Boston work. The wild card is if TK exits Boston. For EK, that brings back some of the traffic now lost to other airlines heading in that direction (ME and India).

To take an optimistic view, EK has shown their willingness to announce A380 service with only 2 month's notice. So they could 'announce' Boston this month and have it flying here before the snow has melted.

It's a wonderful news.
Emirates IAD-DXB-IAD is always full. And the system offers to fly via Boston or Milan.
Sorry. But flying on A-388, compared to 773, is a completely different experience.
Now EK is changing Boston and Milan (or Rome) to A-388.
So the alternatives become bearable.

Last time from Dubai I fell asleep (in Y!) somewhere between Georgia and Turkey and woke up near Greenland.
I am on EK 231/232. The rest is just jet lag.

BA has quietly pulled the A380 from the LHR-BOS-LHR 239/238 rotation this coming Sunday and Monday.

No reason for them to fly it and be the guinea big when EK has swept in.

Drove by E yesterday and saw a BA 747 at E12 and an EK 777 are E11 - new gates definitely appear to be in use.

"Apparently" commencing March 2018, although this one very much depends on who you believe...

Well I am tied to my desk today, however if i am very lucky and she comes in on the northern track over Cape Ann, I could be seriously fortunate and have her go right over my house (as is often the case with EK flights when they use this track) at around 1.20 (due to arrive 1.30).. fingers crossed it works out, just depends on the wind and airport set up for today.

I'm hoping (fat chance) for a rare 15R arrival - my office has a clear view that way, over the N Washington St bridge.

It won't happen, but a man can dream!

Haha was seriously considering taking a late lunch and driving to Castle Island (if she comes in from the south) to watch the landing

http://www.aviationweather.gov/adds/met ... translated gives us:

Forecast for: KBOS (BOSTON , MA, US)
Text: KBOS 261129Z 2612/2718 20010KT P6SM BKN100
Forecast period: 1200 to 1900 UTC 26 January 2017
Forecast type: FROM: standard forecast or significant change
Winds: from the SSW (200 degrees) at 12 MPH (10 knots; 5.2 m/s)
Visibility: 6 or more miles (10+ km)
Ceiling: 10000 feet AGL
Clouds: broken clouds at 10000 feet AGL
Weather: no significant weather forecast for this period

It's a bit at odds with what I see out of my window, no way do I have 6 miles visibility and 10,000 ft ceiling, but I'm an hour north of BOS.

NWS says this about today in BOS:

A chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 53. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Seems you might be in luck: winds are from the SSW and so they're using the northern track for arrivals:

I'll likely be standing on the ramp, though not too close. I have no business with that a380 so I don't want to get in the way!

I've had the good fortune to work with a380s before. Time to let the others have their fun.

Posted my wishes on the Boston Aviation thread, but given that this is the first scheduled 388 to come to BOS, would be awesome if you could get a shot or two for those of us who can't see it, even if just with your phone. :duck:

I work in seaport so hoping they switch arrivals to 4L/4R and I can catch her from my window. In any case happy to see the A380 here and hoping for the upgauge soon so I can stop flying out of JFK/IAD just to avoid the 77W.

EK usually use newer planes and even the most recent delivery, on their one offs and when they have the one off maiden flights when they start a new route. I imagine it looks better in the local press to have a shiny new plane with their latest IFE etc.

It seems to be the case. Emirates one-off A380 flight to AMM was onboard A6-EUC, and Emirates first scheduled A380 flight to DOH was with A6-EUC too.

Forecast is for wind to be 10 knots coming from 220 so probably it will be 22L.

if anyone is spotting, a periscope live feed would be fantastic. it's funny how the approach controller is calling her 'heav.... super", "heavy", and now eventually "super."

Listening to the ATC of the final vectors...the plane came on the freq. as "Emirates 237 super" and the controller – understandably, having likely not heard "super" on the freq. except for the occasional 388 diversion – said "Emirates 237 heavy" before correcting himself to "Emirates 237 super." ;)

Update 1: The controller said "Emirates 237 heavy" a few more times, and then tower called him "heavy" before correcting to "super." Again, understandable given that, before today, the only "supers" BOS has seen have been diversions.

Update 2: And she has landed!
