Air Canada's new network partner - Silver Airways!

Fri Jan 27, 2017 4:10 pm

Air Canada has signed an interline agreement with Fort Lauderdale, Florida based Silver Airways. The agreement includes Silver Airways’ Florida and Bahamas network (does not include Cuba network).

While the agreement allows passengers a larger network on a single ticket, it does not include reciprocal frequent flyer benefits.

So are American carriers allowed to take pax from other countries to Cuba yet? Or are other carriers just not allowed to sell those tickets?

My guess is its the later. Plus those types of codesharing or interlining agreements with american carriers (for cuba) will happen over time.

For example American can sell tickets from London to Havana via Miami, so yes they can

Wow did not see that coming! too bad though its just an interline and not a codeshare agreement.

Good for Silver. Both AC and Silver have large operations in and out of FLL so it looks this arrangement will be a winner for both sides.

Interline agreements aren't any different. Interline agreements cover the proration of tickets to allow an airline to resell a seat on a partner's route but remit a discounted amount of money (based on the terms of the interline agreement). However, the way interline works is that the marketing carrier prices the operating carrier's flight based on the fares that the operating carrier filed.

With Codesharing, the marketing carrier is able to create its own fares for the operating carrier's flights. This doesn't change the interline agreement. The same rules for prorating the ticket still applies. Codesharing just gives the marketing carrier the freedom to price the interline leg as they see fit. Plus, it gives them the ability to market another carrier's flight as their own.

So yes, AC can codeshare if they want. That isn't tied to the interline agreement. I believe AC has to go through FAA regulatory approval to codeshare though. But if its approved and both carriers are fine, then there's nothing stopping them.

Connections from AC to Silver in FLL will be a bit cumbersome because of the terminal change, but not any more cumbersome than the existing connections from B6 to Silver. But this is still a good get for them. It opens up a lot of destinations that AC doesn't fly on their own and never would and allows AC pax to get there on one reservation with one stop (previously to do it they had to connect over a UA hub to FLL or MCO).

AC already flies to 6 destinations in Cuba, so legalities aside, I don't think they would benefit to also accessing Silver's Cuba flights.

Agreed. AC wouldn't want to give up its competitive advantage having flown extensively to Cuba for so many years (incl. US embargo)...plus I suspect, getting cuba network in their interline with Silver may involve several layers of FAA approvals..
