Super Bowl 2017 in Houston - List of Add'l Flights & Upgauges

Sat Jan 28, 2017 4:54 am

Super Bowl LI in Houston is next weekend.

One topic on Jetblue's additional flights is here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1353649 , but I am interested in discussing the topic regarding all the airlines at both Hobby (HOU) and Intercontinental (IAH) airport in detail. Specifically, I would assume United is gonna be adding flights and using larger equipment to IAH and Southwest will be increasing frequency at HOU. Anyone have the details?

Here are the changes for Delta Air Lines:

AT IAH:
Friday, February 3rd:
- Adding an additional 6 flights from ATL-IAH for a total of 14 flights. The flights will be (1) MD88, (1) MD90, (1) CRJ9, (4) 739, (7) 757 domestic. This is both an increase in flights and seats for IAH as Delta usually utilizes CRJ9, A320/A319s, M88s on this route.
- Upgauging 2 out of 4 flights between LGA-IAH from Endeavor Air to mainline 739s.
- Flying 2 flights from BOS-IAH w/757 domestics.
- Flying 1 flight from BDL-IAH w/a 757 domestic.
- Flying 1 flight from PVD-IAH w/a 757 domestic. DL does not usually fly any nonstops between BOS-IAH, BDL-IAH, PVD-IAH.

Monday, February 6th:
- Adding an additional 10 flights flying from IAH-ATL, for a total of 18 flights. The flights will be (7) 753, (11) 757 domestic and int'l mix. Another increase in available seats.
- Flying 2 flights from IAH-BOS w/757 domestics.
- Flying 1 flight from IAH-BDL w/a 757 domestic.
- Flying 1 flight from IAH-PVD w/a 757 domestic.
---- Normal DL flights and equipment for DTW-IAH, MSP-IAH, and SLC-IAH service both days, both directions.

AT HOU:
Friday, February 3rd:
-No increases in flights or aircraft.

Monday, February 6th:
-What seems to be 0 flights are scheduled out of Hobby???

My hometown airports growing up were both IAH and HOU. It is exciting to see so much additional DL flying to IAH. I can't remember a time that Delta has flown the 753 to IAH. Anyone know how they will accommodate so many additional flights at IAH Terminal A? Gate space seems pretty tight there with Spirit flying among others. Does Terminal A have hardstanding operations? Anyone gonna be at IAH on the 3rd or 6th. Would be great to see some pictures of the gates full of Delta mainline aircraft.

In terms of Hobby, I am surprised that they are not also increasing flights from the standard MD88/717 to 757s or 739s. I am pretty sure Hobby can accommodate a 757. What is strange is the 0 scheduled flights on the 6th. Delta.com doesn't even allow one to see full flights that day...it comes up with 0 flights. Is this correct? Is this to move their operation to IAH for the increase in flights?

Actually HOU is seeing upgauges...717s going to 1 319 and MD88s on the 6th. AA is sending a 321 from LAX as well as all 321 from CLT and 1 738. United has a couple of 757s to BOS and 739 to ATL.

I think SWA added like 2 BOS-HOU on the 3rd and a few HOU-BOS and HOU-ATL on the 6th and that is about it.

Little off topic but still Super Bowl related - anyone know where the DirectTV blimp is sleeping this year in the Houston area?

Delta also upgraded two of the LGA-IAH flights (usually on 2-class RJs) to 737-900ERs.

It looks like they're pretty much just using their normal Terminal A gates along with Gate A11 which is common-use. The turns can be done pretty quickly since the outgoing aircraft (today) and incoming aircraft (Sunday/Monday) will be practically empty. NK uses the other concourse so they're not really a factor, but the security checkpoints in A will be a compete and utter zoo on Monday.

UA has added, IIRC, 4 extra IAHBOS, 2 extra IAHATL and three IAHBOS charters. Brought in 100+ extra personnel from other cites, and open 24 hrs. Sun-Mon. They expect 55K passengers on the 6th.

B6 added a PVD-HOU and DL added a PVD IAH for 2/3-2/6 both sold out for the return days ago.

Prior to these two flights, PVD has only ever had one Super Bowl extra flight, so for a double sell out, is impressive

Not to derail this topic, but most of the Patriot fans I know who've made travel plans over the last two weeks have found it far cheaper to get a flight to DFW and rent a car and drive a few hours to get to the game at Houston.

I would bet there is also a few extra charter flights into IAH this weekend. I know in the past the Patriots had a season ticket holder charter to the Super Bowl as part of the ticket package. I recall it being the scariest line call of my life when I worked line mtc in BOS. Walked out to a 767-300 full of fans to fix a broken seat. We got some ugly looks that morning. The why are THEY here? We quickly got them on their way.

I have a co worker returning from a cruise Sunday AM. Shouldn't be an issue leaving IAH before the game.

That's not in the least surprising..
The same is likely true of SAT, AUS, or even a few smaller markets within driving range of Houston.
