New service announcements: CLE, CVG and BNA

Mon Jan 30, 2017 3:19 pm

Three airports have announcements for new service this week. The CLE director is saying F9 people will be there. BNA folks say it's a new destination.

Are they tied together? Anybody know what's going on?

BNA is supposed to be at 10, so we should know soon enough. I think I heard CVG is Thursday. Don't know about CLE

CLE is tomorrow. Maybe just coincidence.

Probably coincidence. Seems to be a mystery except that BNA will be a "never before served" destination.

When I saw this thread title, given the non-CLE airports, I thought is was to be a DL announcement for all three airports. Seeing, though the reference to F9, I was disappointed, as CLE could use more business-friendly flights that operate at least 2x per day....

Thanks. Then it's coincidence. CLE is something with F9.

CVG announcement is tomorrow as well. Looks like CLE and CVG will be all about F9.

Any guesses on routes?

If it must be F9, I'd love to see CLE-Puerto Vallarta, CLE-Cabo San Lucas, and CLE-San Diego.

I could see F9 adding CVG-SEA and maybe even CVG-SAN

I find BNA-YYC to be an extremely odd route.

YYC has no flights to BOS, WAS or ATL but has a flight to BNA?

Odd...

Frontier is a true LCC. Their business model is built specifically around avoiding partnerships. LCCs tend to stay away from interline if they can.

Well...it's only 2x a week, but yes it is an odd route. But WR does fly BNA-YYZ. So it makes a little more sense.

I misread CVG as CDG and got excited for a moment: intercontinental flights from cleveland again maybe? But no.

Well its still weird, especially that they compete with AC on BNA-YYZ. I know that AC flights are usually serving smaller cities from YYZ as an hub feeder, but what about WR? I guess BNA-YYZ and BNA-YYC will mostly be based on leisure traffic.

I think leisure traffic will be a big driver behind this. Also, there's a lot of musical connections between Nashville and Alberta. Country Music is pretty big there, so there's that.

Huge country music tourist draw - and it is Thursday/Sunday which is a very good fit for visitors. I would imagine that that a combination of the existing WS BNA-YYZ flight O&D to YYC and the Nashville CVB were involved in this flight being launched.

Not to mention Detroit doesn't either being a major skyteam hub you would think WS would launch DTW.

I would think WS could cover any code shares with DL via MSP.

Delta has tried ATL-YYC in the past, never stuck around though.
We do have service to both JFK (WS) and EWR (AC), so that may take any possibility of BOS or WAS off the table.

F9 flies a lot of stuff out of CLE including Caribbean international. It's hard for me to be envision what a "big announcement" for them could be when they already fly CLE-SEA/PDX/SFO/LAX/LAS/PHX. Perhaps it's a flight to SAN as that would be the last west coast dot for them to connect?

I don't think F9 has the narrow body aircraft to do Europe from CLE or CVG unless it was to KEF. That seems unlikely unless they begin a partnership with another airline to sell onward connections.

Just curious, does anyone have a source confirming F9 is holding an event tomorrow, I checked all over for CVG, and I have not seen anything about an announcement occurring tomorrow. It just seemed strange, because F9 seems to always hold their events on Thursday.

Route wise, I was thinking CVG-PDX/SEA are over-due, plus CVG/CLE-SAN, since the west coast routes are doing very well. CVG-IAH/DFW seems to do pretty well, so I could also see CLE getting these cities.

I would love to see some Mexico/Caribbean flights from CVG/CLE, I am just skeptical that anything like PVR/SJD would work. CVG and CLE have the exact same list of Caribbean flights, (SJU/CUN/PUJ/MBJ/FPO), so I would imagine they have similar demand within the Caribbean. DL operated CVG-PVR/SJD for a while (2005-6ish), but that was with 670 daily flights to back it up. I am not sure it would work now though, maybe Saturday-only in the Summer.

That is correct. UA does operate a 737 on the flight from CLE and its 2x/week, so CLE has quite a bit more capacity to SJU. However, I think G4 will probably expand the frequency and duration of the CVG-SJU route if it does well enough.

Its cool to see that CLE has maintained that route, its certainly an interesting one for UA to continue to operate with all the cuts they have made. Has anyone used it? Does it seem to have high loads?

Can tell you when I worked for CO this flt was oversold on way down but was rather empty on the return mostly due to it arriving so late that there was zero connecting traffic on it , it was mostly cruise traffic and local PR population, CLE had large PR population on west side and Lorain county ,think that also plays into why it still running, on top of that when the flt was 738 or 739 we would have over 4K lbs of freight from Summit Racing alone and often have to cut some of the freight

Cool, I did not know CLE had a large PR population. It looks like the returned is timed in mid-afternoon now, so I hope it continues to do well. If G4 does well at CLE, which I think is very likely, I wonder if they would go after CLE-SJU. G4 is taking an interesting approach at CLE, starting with low frequency to a bunch of destinations, so hopefully some of the routes get more flights/week eventually.

Never mind, the booking tool is working again, so far the extended schedule is not visible. Last time they did this it opened around 11 PM EST if I recall correctly.

CLE to MSP, SAN, IAH, CLT.

More cherry picking except SAN. Will we ever have GROWTH to the forgotten PBI, MCI, SAT, PVD, RIC, SLC, ALB to name a few.

Its loaded, CVG is getting SAN and MSP. Its really slow though, so there might be more from CVG.
The MSP bookings for both CLE and CVG just disappeared, they must be adding schedules or something.

CVG/CLE to MSP are on there but sometimes disappear, its really buggy, they must still be loading the schedules.

They have not been expanded past 6/06, so its possible CVG could still see cities like SEA/PDX that would start in June.

Will UA ever start growing in CLE again? They still have point to point routes and a crew domicile I believe. UA brought back CLE-FLL
