I understand the need to refresh once in a while or completely update (like Alaska did), but I thought the most recent icy-blue Air Canada livery was brilliant. It looked great, it felt very Canadian, and it was classy. This looks like a coal miner was trying to do a design and smeared black in all the wrong places.

I like it!! :)
But agree that a red line above the black on lower fuselage would have been a very nice detail.
However, will miss the detail of the current livery's leaf tail.

I'm ambivalent about it. I really like the current livery, but oh well.

One thing I noticed in the fleet drawings is that it breaks out the A320 and A321 but only lists the MAX 8 and no 9. I thought they said they ordered both? Possibly going MAX 8/321neo?

MAX’d out on MAX threads. If you are starting a thread, and it’s about the MAX - stop. There’s already a thread that covers it.

Terrible. Current pale green livery is so crisp and fresh to this day.

I think you're looking a little too deep here, there is no CSeries model there either, so I guess that means they cancelled it and ordered E2s!!

And some people are asking how it embodies Canada, heres a link to their pdf:
https://www.aircanada.com/content/dam/aircanada/portal/documents/PDF/media/livery/illustrative_guide_en.pdf#page=6

How it embodies Canada...
"Canada's scenery is largely dominated by black and grey rocks"

Couldn't think of anything more inspiring than rocks? Not the forests, prairies, lakes, oceans, etc? Rocks and mountains. Good one AC.
"The mask design was inspired by the facial markings of Canada's indigenous birds" ...while they have a picture of a loon.
For reference, this is a loon
Image

It lacks the bandit mask

"The aircraft belly is painted black to unify the fleet and provides a distinct backdrop for the Air Canada roundel"

"The black was influenced by the frozen bodies of water of Canada's vast impressive nature"

Here's a pic from Arctic Bay. The only black is where the ice is cracked and water isn't frozen

Image

and the roundel on the nacelle "to reaffirm awareness of the brand when viewed from an aircraft window"

Um, I'm pretty sure if they're travelling on your aircraft, they're aware of your brand. Wanna reaffirm it? Give them a reason to fly you again.

It is so they have branding present when someone takes a photo from the cabin with the engine visible. Same reason why many airlines but branding on the insides of winglets.

I'm just glad it's two-toned. AC has gone with rather plain, inoffensive liveries for some time. I don't hate it and I don't love it.

It's very reminiscent of the 1990s livery. That livery was almost identical except it was Eurowhite (no black underbelly) and the roundel was up by the lettering (which was a similar font).

I was never a fan of the toothpaste livery, so overall I feel that this is an improvement.

Like most of it. Black is an underused color in liveries and this one will stand out. I also like the round maple leaf symbol.

But... I DO NOT LIKE raccoon masks on any aircraft. It looks like poorly applied eyeliner. That's true on the A350 and it's true for the poor 787 and A321 in these pictures.

When Air Canada released the "toothpaste" livery I was completely blown away with the simplicity of it and the sheer beauty as well. Those airplanes looked right at home on a bright winter day or during the long summer twilight. To me it just screamed Canada, and as a Canadian made me feel proud to have an airline with an identity that jumped out at you like a KLM or a British Airways. The icy accents of the "toothpaste" and teal, topped off with the beautiful shades and highlights of the red Maple Leaf on the tail. The thin, teal pin striping on the wingtip strakes and flap canoes added a subtle yet elegant touch. But this... this is brutal, the days of flair jeans, telephone booths & Britney Spears died in the early 2000's, just like this livery did. Yes it's simple, and modest but for AC to go from what they currently have to this is a huge step backwards. At least now the livery matches their product and service, boring and uninviting. Completely disappointed, at least we still have AC Rouge.

A bit more color on the back of the fuselage would be nice, though. Also I agree that the maple leaf logo below the windows looks a bit odd.

There never was a black tail with AC...apart from the Star Alliance and Toronto Raptors schemes. The old 90's colors had a dark green tail, not black.

The black (dark green) tail livery was my least favourite AC livery, not sure why they would go back to that again. Not enough red for my tastes.

I am really undecided on the new livery. I really love the current livery, especially the tail design. I never liked the 80/90ies tails as from further away, it just looked dark and the maple leaf wasn't really visible (especially for somebody with a red/green color-blindness ;-) ).

But actually the new livery, although very different, looks good to me as well. I like the black belly and engines. The fuselage is just a bit too white for me.
But for what AC stands or wants to stand, it's a very good fit.

Holy cow. That's basically a mish-mash of former liveries including:
-the 90s Eurowhite and black tail, but with the roundel back on tail.
-the 60s/70s black around the cockpit windows
-the 60/70s black typeface used for the font.

What's with the second roundel below the windowline instead of beside Air Canada? It looks so out of place.

Quite frankly if that's the best they could come up with, they should have just tweaked the toothpaste by sticking the roundel on the tail. At least that's unique. This is a major fail and much hype about nothing.

Amazing how branding agencies these days can take hundreds of thousands of dollars from a company, spend an hour in photoshop and convince the company's senior managers that they've somehow come up with something revolutionary.

I agree with most comments that it is very Delta-ish but overall I like it. Doesn't scream Canada to me but I am not Canadian either, so I am not sure what would. Plus the roundrel maple leaf looks more like a red star from a distance and would fit Aeroflot better.

This has mixed feelings from me. It's a retro AC kinda vibe, which is good, and the A350-style windows are the best. But the other livery was great. I'm gonna miss that, but this is good. Other airlines mess that up completely, (CHINA EASTERN YOUR LIVERY SUCKS) but AC has done good. And that belly is great, and will make for some great photos in the rain. Now seeing the whole fleet makes me love this even more. It shows their goal of being formal and good. BUT AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THEIR NOW OLD LIVERY IS SILVER?!

Did Air Canada merge with Delta? It's OK. Boring. The maple leaf could be bigger on the fuselage and I guess the sunglass effect on the cockpit windows is a nod to Air Canada's original red/white livery in the 60's and 70's that had it.

So, on that topic, what was the solution to Boeing's concern about dark colours on the nacelles of the 787? I don't recall all of the details, but I remember Boeing (and not GE/RR) limiting colour choice to light hues due to either the effect of heat retention on composites, or laminar flow. Obviously this is no longer a serious problem, because airlines use darker shades routinely, as BA (and now AC) do.

I actually think it's just fine. It's classy and timeless for sure. I do like the mask look myself but do think it looks a bit strange on both the A321 and Dreamliner. To me they look best on the larger 777 and 330's. And to think they stole it from the A350.. Didn't Roman Abramovich's 767 have it before the A350? At any rate, I'm all good with this and quite like the red cheat line idea but I'd like that cheat line to encompass the windows down the entire length.

Air Canada had the chance to knock it out of the park. For me the most iconic and distinctive Canadian livery will always be the "Proud Wings" Livery adopted by Canadian before they were swallowed up by big red. That Goose was just awesome and as Canadian as you can get!! That's the standard that I judge liveries on. While this is a clean crisp and professional looking their really is no wow factor!!
