KLM/Air Mauritius announce AMS-MRU

Wed Feb 15, 2017 9:59 am

http://news.klm.com/klm-launches-flight-to-mauritius-in-cooperation-with-air-mauritius/
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will introduce a direct flight from Amsterdam to Mauritius in cooperation with Air Mauritius as from October 30th 2017. Through this cooperation KLM and Air Mauritius can provide a year-round product for the customers.

In the winter KLM will fly the route as follows:
KL501 AMS 1720 - 0735+1 MRU B789 146
KL502 MRU 0945 - 1835 AMS B789 257

Air Mauritius will take over from S18, with the A340-300, initially 2 weekly and going to 3 weekly.in August and October

Exciting route I've been looking forward to a while!

Great to see KLM expanding and adding routes like this. It's only February and this is the 13th new destination the added this year.
They added 14 new routes in 2016.

Also great to see a new airline operating the A340 to Amsterdam. Surinam Airways is the only airline using the A340 to Amsterdam (and it's at Schiphol for a long time :sarcastic: ) so it's great to see Air Mauritius using the A340 on this route.
Sadly we"ll have to wait at least a year for the first one to come and by that time the first a350-900's will enter Air Mauritius' fleet so I wonder how long (or rather; how short) we"ll see this at Schiphol:

Fantastisch nieuws! I think this is the first time AMS and MRU have been connected directly. Mauritius, the long lost Dutch colony will be linked with the Netherlands once more :) This flight will surely attract customers from a wide catchment area (Netherlands, Flanders, the UK outside of London, Norway, Niedersachsen and Nordrhein Westfalen (though of course they have their own flights from CGN now).

Not bad. I wonder if this was a destination Norwegian was looking at with their 787 based in AMS in the future. And if so, would they still be ready to announce this route?

As far as I know Air Mauritius is slated to receive two A350s this year via AerCap.
They have four A350s on order directly with Airbus, which have been pushed back to 2020 or later this week.
With the pushing back of the A350s they also announced an order for two A330-900s, which I believe will arrive in 2019.

Plenty of time to enjoy the fourholers 8-)

So they are going to operate just 2 A350's for a period of 3-4 years.

I depends on where they are going to fly the 2 A350's, the 2 A330neo's (and 2 A330ceo's) and the (remaining?) A340's.

But I sure hope so. A lot of people get excited for the new 787's, A350's and what not, but not me. They are boring to look at.
I'm more of a 747, A340, DC-10, MD-11 etc. guy.

YO! Wassup, "dude"!

Why would Norwegian ever consider Scandinavia-Caribbean direct flights?

Get real, "dude"!

Probably for the same reason why KL considered MRU. Why would KL consider this route?

There have been rumours about Norwegian in Mauritius and I saw this a while ago:

    http://news.voyage-ile-maurice.info/ile ... plaisance/

There doesn't seem to be much 'substance' to the article. However, at present I think only Thomson flies from Scandinavia to MRU, in the winter months. And I would think there's quite some demand in Scandinavia for MRU, perhaps enough for Norwegian to consider.

My guess is that the A330s can make it, but not at maximum payload, making their potential greater to India, SE Asia, African routes.
As for the A350s, I would be surprised if they are debuted on any route but the Paris route.

There are talks about them restarting GVA at the end of the year once they got their A350s.
They may be used on the route, or maybe indeed relocate an A343 to GVA and move the A350s over to CDG.
